Style Files: Episode 22 - Munich Helles

28m · Published 31 May 10:00

In this episode Bob and I keep crushing lagers. This week we travel to Munich, Germany and look into the Munich Helles lager. A beer for beer lovers, the German-style helles is a malt accented lager beer that balances a pleasant malt sweetness and body with floral Noble hops and restrained bitterness. The helles is a masterclass in restraint, subtly and drinkability which makes it an enduring style for true beer lovers and an elusive style for craft brewers to recreate. The German helles reminds beer lovers that the simple things in life are usually the most rewarding and worth pursuing.

Style examples:

1.     Masthead – Augenblick

2.     Wooly Pig Farm Brewery – Rustic Helles

3.     Noble Beast Brewing Co. – Third Dimension Helles

ABV: 4.7-5.4%

IBUs: 16-22

Color: 3-5

Serving Temp: 38-40F

Serving Pressure: 7-12psi

Beer Representation: Wanderer

ABV: 5%

 IBUs: N/A

Beer Description: Wanderer is our unfiltered German-style Helles Lager. A meticulous, highly technical beer brewed utilizing traditional techniques and ingredients, Wanderer is crisp, bright, and immensely enjoyable. Wanderer pours a brilliant straw gold color in the glass with a puffy, bright white foam. It carries a flavor profile of doughy malts, light straw, clean lager yeast, and just the right dash of zippy noble hops. Beers that command your attention are a wonderful thing. Beers that can fade into the background and sort of be an unspoken companion to celebratory moments in life are also a wonderful thing and deserve to be held in equally high esteem. As a crisp, highly drinkable, and beautifully executed beer, Wanderer fits this profile beautifully.

Style Files: Episode 18 - Czech Pale Lager

36m · Published 03 May 10:00

In this episode Bob and I stick with lagers, but instead of Germany or the U.S. this time we head to the Czech Republic, and tackle the Czech Pale Lager.  The Czech Pale Lager is a hoppy, session-strength pale lager that is among the most popular styles of beer among drinkers in the Czech Republic. The guidelines give us something of a mish-mash of guidance, though. The beer should be "rich" and "refreshing," which can be a tough needle to thread, though not impossible.

Style examples:

1.     Bernard světlé pivo 10

2.     Notch Session Pils

3.     Radegast Rázna 10

ABV: 3-4.1%

IBUs: 20-35

Color: 3-6

Serving Temp: 40-45F

Serving Pressure: 10-14 PSI

Our sample beer for the week:

Beer representation for the week: Žatecký Světlý Ležák which translated to Zatecky Light Lager

5.0% ABV and 19 IBUs

Beer Description: Over 650 years of cultivation tradition, the experience of local hop growers and a unique microclimate give Žatec aromatic hops an unusual character. Experience its full aroma in Žatec Světlý Ležák brewed under the supervision of Tomas Lejsek from the Žatec Brewery.

Season 4: Episode 16 - Arrogant Goat Brewing Company

1h 25m · Published 28 Apr 10:00

This week I sat down with Mark Burke, Dave Jones, and Zach Osborne from Arrogant Goat Brewing in Bucyrus, Ohio. The guys told me how they were inspired to open a brewery by drinking a craft beer while attending a parade. The rest as they say, is history. All three guys take part in brewing and running the tap room. While the tap room is open two days a week, they have a steady flow of clientele. We talked about the process of opening, and how at times things seemed to grind to a halt thanks to 2020. In the end they just celebrated their 1st year anniversary, and they are having a blast. During the show we sampled some very tasty beers including:

Beer Selection:

·       Sunrise Service – Hefeweizen 4.2%

·       The Goat – Red Ale 5.4%

·       With All Due Respect – IPA 6.4%

·       Not My First Time – Dry Stout 4.2%

Style Files: Episode 17 - German Pilsner

42m · Published 26 Apr 10:00

This week Bob and I wrap up our lager kick for now as we discuss the German Pilsner. Quite possibly the most iconic beer style in modern history, the pilsner captured the attention of beer drinkers across the world and inspired a myriad of regional imitations. This lightly colored, exquisitely balanced lager remains one of the most loved beers to enjoy, and one of the most challenging for the brewer to create. Pilsner is characteristically light in color and have a very short finish. The world over, pilsner -style lagers have become the standard beer for many reasons, and American craft brewers have worked hard to put their own unique spin on this classic German beer. A classic German-style pilsner is straw to pale in color with a malty sweetness that can be perceived in aroma and flavor. Perception of hop bitterness is medium to high. Noble-type hop aroma and flavor are moderate and quite obvious. Distinctly different from the Bohemian-style pilsner, this style is lighter in color and body and has a lower perceived hop bitterness.

ABV: 4.4 – 5.2%

IBUs: 22-40

Color: 2-4

Serving Temp: For most lagers and pilsners, 38 degrees is ideally your low point. Anywhere up to the low-to-mid 40s is fair game. “[Pilsners] are more traditionally [served at] 38 degrees, and are probably best suited there.

Serving Pressure: 11-16PSI

Examples of this style:

1.      Pauliner – Pils

2.     Wooly Pig– Keller Pils

3.     Lager Heads – Tacklebox Pilsner

Drink representative selection of the week: Maize Valley German Style Pilsner 5.2% ABV and 30 IBU

Beer as described by brewer: Brewed with pilsner malts from Dusseldorf Germany accompanied by a touch of carafoam and wheat malts for head retention and foam stability.  The malt profile is light, clean and crisp with hints of breadiness while teetnang and perle hops lend a floral and citrusy hop character.
