EP 13: Portrait of an Artist, conversation with Zaide Harker

58m · Published 19 Sep 07:00

About The Episode:
In this captivating episode, we embark on an artistic voyage with the talented Zaide. Join host Madelaine Buttini as they delve deep into the world of painting, uncovering the artist's unique journey and the evolution of their distinctive style. Discover the wellspring of inspiration that fuels their creative fire and gain valuable insights into their creative process, from that initial spark of an idea to the completion of a masterpiece. You'll also explore the fascinating habits and rituals that keep their artistic spirit alive. So, whether you're an art enthusiast or simply curious about the creative process, this episode promises a vibrant canvas of conversation and inspiration with Zaide.

About Zaide:
Large swathes of oil paint and gestural application with a palette knife characterise Zaide’s visceral style of painting. The work appears as an abstract array of clearly discernible paint strokes, indicative of a process in which volumes of paint has been expelled onto the canvas. As the viewer moves about each piece, the thickly worked strokes change and weave together in a variety of ways to imbue the subject with life. These swirling compositions invite the viewer to dive into the solitary state in which the paintings were completed.

Zaide’s family history with Huntington’s Disease and his experience as a disability support worker informs themes of identity, imperfection and decay. The undulating peaks and troughs of oil paint on canvas show the tumultuous application by a hand inhibited by chorea. The expressive nature of Zaide’s work thus reflects on rejection of pre-established narratives in the artists’ life.

Zaide lives in West End, Queensland with fellow artist and business partner Aleja Hine. The two run community exhibitions together under the brand A2Z with the objective of providing a platform for local artists to share their work.

In this episode, I talk with Melbourne based visual artist and podcaster (In Too Deep), Jack Rowland. He is someone I call a friend and I am glad to have met him through the internet.

Please note: We are not condoning or encouraging the use of illicit drugs, these are just our lived experiences. We also discuss his art, self care, the brain and mental health, dropping his representation with a gallery, the greatness he is doing with his poddie (aka exposing a pedophile and getting them to admit it), and about mystical things like thought patterns and so much more! The interview does turn into more of a conversation, being friends that was going to happen anyway... I hope you enjoy!

EP 7: Interview w. Musician & Nurse, Georgia Maq

47m · Published 26 Feb 10:00

In this episode, I talk with all-round legend and creative powerhouse Georgia Maq. This episode covers all things feminism, music, her journey as a nurse, healing, the current issues within the Australian music industry and what's next for Georgia now that Camp Cope has announced it's split.

Massive apology for my terrible audio, but we can hear Gee so that is all that matters.

About Georgia Maq: (Bio from Amrap)
Georgia McDonald has established herself in recent years as the singer and guitarist of Melbourne, Australia indie rock band Camp Cope, whose sophomore album How to Socialise and Make Friends (Run For Cover/Poison City Records) won widespread acclaim, topping a slew of 2018 end of year lists including NPR, Pitchfork, Billboard, Bandcamp, Stereogum, The Guardian, and Brooklyn Vegan.

The impact of the trio's music on the indie landscape has been undeniable, with McDonald emerging as a brave, resilient, and often politicised figure. Using her formidable voice to fight for the betterment of the music industry and rally against sexism, racism and all forms of structural inequality, she has never shied away from the uncomfortable and difficult topics that dominate the news cycle.

EP 5: Interview w. NFT Creator and Trader Scaly Nelson

47m · Published 09 Feb 09:00

In this episode, I talk with Hawaii based NFT Creator and Trader Scaly Nelson. Scaly and I connected last year after I started pursuing the NFT dragon (hint: I never caught the dragon, it never eventuated into anything).

If you're second guessing listening to this, you don't need a lot of knowledge about NFTs or crypto. If you would like to quickly learn you can read the Medium blog, "The Ultimate Guide to NFTS" written by Scaly Nelson. He does explain what an NFT, crypto and web 3 is and how it fits in within the context of a trader, artist or creator. We also discuss the current market situation, distribution sites for NFTs, his project 8liens, wins and losses, and everything else in between.

EP 4: Interview w. James Hornsby
