A Long Conversation About Jesus

1h 53m · Published 19 Mar 10:00

FBS tries something different for this new "series" and your hosts, Pastor Kyle Nelson and Christina Scott, enter the long-form podcast.

In view of Easter season ahead, they talk through many of the details and highlights of Jesus' life. They discover some of the beautiful ways He retraced steps of the nation of Israel, fulfilled prophecy hidden in the hearts of Israel, and showed Himself the fulfillment of what God had been foreshadowing for generations.

This long conversation strings together just a few ways Jesus' life intersected with places of significance in the Old Testament. This isn't just an OT/NT comparison chat! It is a fun "wow-moment" conversation on the complexity of an all-knowing, deeply loving Savior.

We hope it is a reaffirmation of the intentionality of our God and His intricate plan for the redemption of humanity.

Don't judge me, Bro | Context is Queen: Episode 4

20m · Published 12 Mar 10:00

This final episode of the "Out of Context" series tackles two very different misquotes/misuse of scripture. Our hosts first talk about the idea that "Money is the root of all evil." That sounds familiar, right? I'm pretty sure the Bible says that... or does it?

Then, they transition to another biblical reference that gets shortened all the time - "Judge not, lest ye be judged." Well, if we can't judge, then how can we correct wrong behavior? Who are the judges and juries?

Listen in and share with a friend. We hope this sparks some conversations that take you Monday through Saturday.

But who is He talking to? | Context is Queen: Episode 3

17m · Published 05 Mar 11:00

The word of God is true, and it should be quoted often. But what happens when we select one sentence from the middle of a passage and quote it out of context? We can do harm to our own understanding and to others' walk when we misuse scripture or cherry-pick just what we like.

This installment of Fathom Beyond Sunday is about two different verses that have a beautiful message. Unfortunately, they also often get truncated and quoted without context. Listen in as Pastor Kyle Nelson and Christina Scott talk through Romans 8:28 and Jeremiah 29:11.

Where does your help come from? | Context is Queen: Episode 2

17m · Published 27 Feb 11:00

In this episode, our FBS hosts dive in on one saying, "God helps those who help themselves." and one verse - "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." (Philippians 4:13)

These two ideas are misused in similar ways and are frequently quoted - both in and out of the Church.

Jump in with Pastor Kyle and Christina as they dissect the ideas behind the use of these sayings and the original context of their writers.

Peace, Love, and Happiness? | Context is Queen: Episode 1

16m · Published 23 Feb 01:00

In this first episode of the new "Out of Context" series, Christina and Pastor Kyle talk through two common statements taken out of context and attributed to the Bible: "God just wants me to be happy." and "God is love."

Is God a Genie-like character that is waiting around to make us happy? Is the God of the Old Testament new and improved in the gospels? God is love, so does that mean He's no longer judge?

Listen in as our hosts tackle these questions and more!

The Wild West of Spirituality | Season 5: Episode 7

36m · Published 20 Oct 15:00

Welcome back, FBS listeners! We have made it to the final worldview in our Jesus Is Better season. Pastor Kyle takes us into the idea of Moralistic Therapeutic Deism.

Maybe you've never heard that title, but you definitely know these people. Everywhere we turn in the current culture is the idea that "individuality is king" and "living your truth" brings freedom. There's a wide scope of beliefs and only one boundary.

Listen in as our hosts discuss the benefits and harms of this worldview and ultimately why Jesus is better.

This season our hosts, Lead Pastor Kyle Nelson and Next Steps Director Christina Scott, are taking us through an overview of a few philosophies and world religions and discussing why Jesus is better.

Are they Christian? | Season 5: Episode 6

48m · Published 12 Oct 19:00

Fathom Beyond Sunday is back with a deep dive on some American religions you may be familiar with. This week Christina Scott has done some research into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Jehovah's Witnesses.

These religions both state publicly that they are Christian and their converts all claim a Christian way of life, however their published doctrines and theology divert from orthodox Christianity in various ways.

Listen in as our hosts try to understand some of the nuances of these American religions and where we can find common ground as we seek to better understand our neighbors.

This season our hosts, Lead Pastor Kyle Nelson and Next Steps Director Christina Scott, are taking us through an overview of a few philosophies and world religions and discussing why Jesus is better.

"Everything is God & God is Everything" | Season 5: Episode 5

38m · Published 06 Oct 22:00

Fathom Beyond Sunday is tackling Hinduism this week and it is BIG. Hinduism is likely the world's oldest religion but doesn't consider itself a religion at all! Listen in as Pastor Kyle guides us through an overview of this polytheistic way of life. There's a diverse mix of ideas and practices from people who claim to be Hindu - this could easily have been a 2-hour podcast. But our hosts try to narrow the scope and answer the same questions each week: what do they believe about God, humanity, and eternity?

Listen in as we get an education on this major world religion and a brief overview of its main offshoot - Buddhism. Jesus is Better has made it to mid-season - join the conservation!

This season our hosts, Lead Pastor Kyle Nelson and Next Steps Director Christina Scott, are taking us through an overview of a few philosophies and world religions and discussing why Jesus is better.
