Archemist Podcast

by Archemist in the Making

Inspired by Brandon Stanton’s Humans of New York Caption on communities being 'victims of the architect' (October, 2014), ‘The Archemist Podcast’ aims to open conversations with those who are interested in architecture whether they are involved in the industry or not. Acting as an extension to the blog 'Archemist in the Making' (by Kimberley K. Hui) this is an audio journal of discussions with my friends. Here, we examine ongoing affairs that are may have some relationship with architecture.

Hero Phenomena Ep. 1 // Are We Passionate Enough?

28m · Published 08 Oct 19:30

Starting Season 4 of the podcast, we’re looking at what it means to be passionate about something. Too often, the word is flounced around a lot - and it’s difficult to affirm whether you are passionate about something by your actions. You can be passionate about a subject and admire it from afar, otherwise allow yourself to be consumed by it…

In this episode, Eastina and I will be exploring our perceptions on what it takes to be passionate about something… and whether we think we’re passionate about what we’re doing now.

This episode is produced on the lands of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people, whom we’d like to acknowledge as the Traditional Owners of the Land. As we are here today to listen and share, we hope that this will inspire everyone who is listening to dedicate a time and space to listen to our First Nation’s stories and celebrate their continuing connection to land and water - for it always was and always will be Aboriginal Land.

Bonus // Time Capsule Revisited: To My Second Year

To our first year - thank you for leaving us a beautiful memory…

A year later and here we are again. Dini and I are back looking at our architecture journey in 2020 as well as reflecting back to our very first recording. Of course, second-year of architecture school makes you realise a lot of things, but then, when we take our time to look back on our past, we realise how far we’ve come.

We think we’ve definitely grown since our first recording - and who knows, we might be back for another one again!

Archemist Podcast: Is This What We Wanted?// Conclusion

47m · Published 10 Feb 20:00

One fateful night in September 2020 - I received a message from a friend who I haven’t heard from six years - who was bursting with ideas about a potential podcast collaboration. Well, two phone calls later, Jina and I established ‘Is This What You Wanted?’, a project that has continued for a busy 5 months. Now that we’ve reached the end - we decided to look back on our journey that has shifted our outlooks and thoughts towards our profession. What were our highlights? Lowlights? And is this what we wanted?

We’d like to thank the following who has been a part of our journey

Yvonne Meng, Graham Ho, Eugenia Tan, Jessica Seneviratna, Will Qu, Daniel Lawson, Denny Chan, Isabella Singal, Kevin Hüi, Tracy Sodder, Daniel Moore

Most importantly - thank you Jina! What would I do without you?

Archemist Podcast: Is This What You Wanted?// Tracy Sodder

We’ve all heard of that saying ‘the worst response is a no, so what’s the harm in trying?’. A quick glance on Dezeen’s job notice board and an email later, Jina’s friend Tracy Sodder found herself working for BIG (yes, Bjarke Ingels Group) as their visualiser in New York. From one country to another, Tracy shares with us her transition as well as the decisions that led to this fateful opportunity.

As we’d like to put it We’d rather regret something that we’ve done than something we haven’t done.
