#324 - Archispeak Turns 12

48m · Published 05 Feb 22:30

In this episode we start off by acknowledging the 12th birthday of the Archispeak podcast. Our first episode titled “That Ah-ha Moment” was published on February 3, 2013 and we don’t recommend listening to it!

Then we explore the potential of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in architectural practices and talk about how these technologies could revolutionize the way architects work. We cover real-time rendering, immersive experiences of building designs, and enhanced client presentations. We also touch on the need for privacy and security considerations regarding the usage and licensing of digital assets. Lastly, we hypothesize how different it would be to start a practice today when it comes to choosing a toolset that would heavily rely on these technologies.

#323 - The Life Afforded

48m · Published 29 Jan 19:00

We further discuss the impact of emerging technology on architecture, particularly regarding the impending release of Apple’s Vision Pro headset.

We also explore the industry’s work culture, explore some intital thoughts about the importance of having a side-hustle, highlight the necessity of architects to continuously adapt, learn, and evolve.

Finally, we touch upon the financial implications in architectural projects and the conflicting demands of design aesthetic and budget constraints… yes, the age-old complaints about “value engineering”.

#321 - AU - New Trends in Custom Residential

44m · Published 15 Jan 14:00

The Archispeak University (AU) series introduces educational content for architects and designers.

In this episode, Danny Wang of Danny Wang Design joins us to discuss new trends in custom residential design and construction, particularly focusing on the integration of indoor and outdoor spaces made possible with his turnkey design build service and some unique building products in the outdoor heating, flooring, and technology categories.

One key aspect of Danny's success is his ability to leverage social media as a marketing and business development tool. With a million Instagram followers, a vibrant YouTube channel, and his TikTok presence, he has built a strong audience, some of which become clients with big budgets. This allows him to explore and execute even more daring and innovative design ideas.

The conversation explores some of the jaw-dropping projects that Danny has worked on, including a pool built over a basement with acrylic windows, allowing views from both above and below the water. Another project features an indoor tennis court with a koi pond on top, creating a unique entry experience. These projects showcase Danny's knack for pushing boundaries and creating truly one-of-a-kind spaces.
