Using Adventure with Purpose to Help Create a Better Society | Isaac Kenyon & Alex Pierrot on SECOND MIND

1h 37m · Published 21 Feb 05:00

We have all been there. You glance down at your phone whilst going about your day to see another headline about that world issue that you care about. Something rises up in you, a new energy that demands action and positive change. But as quickly as this spark arrived, it dims and vanishes as you move through the rest of your day. Maybe you sometimes wonder, what if I answered the call to action?

My guests today, Isaac Kenyon and Alex Pierrot, are prime examples of individuals who have caught that moment of inspiration about a cause they care about and turned it into a positive and purposeful project that creates change. Isaac and Alex run Climate Explorers, a community interest company with the mission to highlight climate solutions, raise environmental awareness, and promote physical and mental wellbeing through eco-adventures in the great outdoors.

----more----

In 2021, Isaac and Alex were joined by 3 others to form the ‘Pedal 4 Parks’ expedition team and complete the world's first cycle over land and sea from Orkney at the northern coast of Scotland all the way down the UK to the Isles of Scilly. Being frustrated with the constant negative headlines surrounding climate issues in mainstream media, the team wanted to explore positive climate solutions and offer some hope by highlighting some of the great work going on in the UK to address climate change. On their adventure over land and sea, they interviewed 25 different companies, organisations, and non-profits all working so hard on ecological conservation, local community action and sustainability projects. They also raised £5000 for their main charity partner the National Parks Protectors Fund, a dedicated fund for vital nature conservation projects across the UK’s 15 National Parks. Their adventure also enabled them to shine a spotlight on the great work national parks are doing to preserve and regenerate wild green spaces.

On top of all this, they even worked with a film crew to create a brilliant documentary chronicling the journey called ‘14 Days South: Over Sea and Land’ and were subsequently invited to speak at COP26 in Glasgow in 2021, sharing their learnings from the ‘Pedal 4 Parks’ project.

Their journey is a welcome breath of fresh air amongst the barrage of alarming headlines that are becoming more and more regular as we continue into our climate and ecological crisis. We cover a lot of ground in this episode, all the way from the planning, mindset and teamwork that went into completing their epic ‘Pedal 4 Parks’ mission, all the way to Alex and Issacs’s relationship to nature and how it has aided their mental health journeys, plus much more.

They have an infectious passion for projects that create positive sustainability change. I hope you can feel this energy yourself from the episode and nurture it so it grows in your own life.

Sending good energy to you all and I hope you enjoy the podcast. Peace!

How to Restore Balance in Your Body and Mind | Dr Ian Tennant on SECOND MIND

1h 52m · Published 04 Aug 05:00

I am in conversation with Dr Ian Tenant, a wellbeing specialist helping people make inexpensive and simple choices that improve their health. With a doctorate from The University of Edinburgh in Clinical and Surgical Sciences and qualifications in sports massage and holistic lifestyle coaching, Ian works with knowledge on the frontiers of medical research to help his clients feel more energised and understand why the habits of healthy people actually work. Ian has previously worked as a researcher at the Medical Research Council Centre for Inflammation Research, but now helps clients face-to-face with health issues, including professional athletes and high-level entrepreneurs.----more----

Ian has risen to conquer his own personal health challenges too, putting chronic digestion and sinus issues into long-term remission and learning how to manage a heart condition whilst still maintaining high levels of physical activity.

We cover a lot of ground in the discussions, all based around Ian’s book called Restoring Balance. He presents a fantastic simple and accessible framework that we can use when assessing and working to improve our personal health. The framework contains six polarities, with the idea that we must individually work to find a state of balance that feels good for us inside each set of polarities. We break down the whole framework in our podcast, discussing the polarities of light/dark, feasting/fasting, connection/independence, movement/stillness, technology/nature and excitement/calmness. Ian tells us why each of these polarities matter, how they work and what you can do to restore your own sense of balance.

Trying to live a healthy life can seem so complicated, as we are bombarded by so much modern information about improving wellbeing. What I love about Ian’s framework is that it’s refreshingly simple with a big picture approach. Whichever direction you travel in life, equipped with Ian’s six polarities model you should have a solid platform to grow and prosper.

Enjoy & Peace

Why You Need to Reconnect with Nature | Faith Douglas on SECOND MIND

1h 40m · Published 26 Jun 10:40

In the last 50 years, humanity has destroyed 50% of all wildlife on Earth. Currently, there’s more carbon dioxide in our atmosphere than any other time in human history, causing a climate breakdown. It is clear our modern society’s relationship with nature is heavily out of balance. Whilst all this destruction is occurring to our environmental life support systems, people in the UK spend an average of 90% of their time indoors, disconnected from nature. How can we value and respect something that we do not feel connected to?

Enter my newest podcast guest, the brilliant Faith Douglas, who has made a career out of helping people with nature connection, a powerful process where an individual can use their senses to mindfully engage with the elements and environments of the natural world. Faith runs forest bathing courses in the UK and she is the curator for Thorp Perrow Arboretum, helping people to enjoy a special selection of tree species. She has recently completed her awesome new book called The Nature Remedy, a guide to help anyone connect back with elements of the natural world, from the sky to the earth to the trees.

----more----

In the podcast, Faith tells her story of how she found her connection to nature through her own personal challenges and started to work with forest bathing. She shares her tips on how to generate a connection with nature, using your senses to relax your mind and body. We cover many of the amazing scientifically-proven benefits of nature connection for mental and physical health and talk about the power of digital detoxing. The conversation also covers why a strong environmental connection is crucial to our society as a whole and features advice for those who have little or no access to nature.

Faith is so passionate about nature and shares some great tips and knowledge for enhancing your connection to our planet. Do reflect on your own connection to the natural world whilst listening. When is the last time you took a moment to really notice and appreciate the flight of a bird or a great old oak tree in your local park?

I invite you to keep your mind open, listen and enjoy.

Ignore the Fear and Find Your Adventure | Fiona Quinn on SECOND MIND

1h 5m · Published 25 May 16:12

My guest on the show is the fantastic Fiona Quinn, an endurance adventurer, entrepreneur and keynote speaker.

Just a few years ago, Fiona was new to adventuring, finding her feet with small local cycling trips. Fast forward to the end of 2018, she was able to paddleboard 800 miles across 81 days from Land’s End to John O'Groats, despite having a deep fear of the sea created when she almost drowned as a child. In completing this paddleboarding achievement, she became the first ever woman to complete a length of Britain triathlon, having already walked and cycled the route in previous years.

----more----

To recount her stories and experiences along the journey, she has released her new book, aptly named ‘Ignore the fear’, including tales of ocean whirlpools and paddling with dolphins.

In other adventures, she has completed the Cam triathlon, circumnavigated the Isle of Wight and wild camped on Dartmoor. Striving to support the wider adventure community, Fiona has used her entrepreneurial spirit to start the adventure book club, where a collective discusses a different adventure book every month.

In this episode, we discuss her process of discovering her inner adventurer as she gained a new sense of confidence and independence. We talk through how her interest in adventure eventually snowballed into walking, cycling and paddleboarding the length of Britain. She shares how her mission presented her with new challenges, from trench foot to wild Scottish whirlpools. In the conversation, she gives a real insight into how she has changed her relationship to fear through her experiences and developed a mindset that has enabled her to complete her endurance challenges. In addition, we cover some practical tips for budding adventurers to turn inspiration into action.

Fiona believes that it is important to find your own unique adventurous spirit and explore on your own terms. I feel this attitude is so empowering for those who have not yet had any adventure experience, but also highly relevant for more seasoned explorers out there too.

Apologies for the lower quality audio in this episode. The Zoom call I had with Fiona had an unstable internet connection, which impacted the recording.

Enjoy!

Humans ARE Nature: Reviving Our Connection to Nature, Society and Our Inner Selves | Satish Kumar on SECOND MIND

1h 6m · Published 11 Mar 17:21

In this episode, I am in conversation with former monk, long-term peace and environmental activist and world-renowned speaker, Satish Kumar, who has been quietly setting the global agenda for change for over 50 years.

At the age of just 9 years old, Satish left home to become a Jain monk and campaigned for Gandhi’s vision of a renewed India. In the 1960s, he embarked on an 8,000-mile peace pilgrimage with no money, walking on foot and relying only on the kindness of strangers to travel to each of the 4 nuclear weapons capitals, delivering a message of peace.

After settling in the UK, Satish served in the position of Editor at Resurgence and Ecologist magazine for over 40 years. He is founder and Director of Programmes of the Schumacher College International Centre for Ecological Studies, and of The Small School, promoting an innovative model of holistic education. He is the author of 9 books, including Soil, Soul & Society: A New Trinity for Our Time.

In this conversation, we discuss how tending to our inner wellbeing can benefit world issues and humanity as a whole. Satish gives his advice on how we can increase our wellbeing through our daily choices. Our guest shares his perspectives on why he thinks we should be careful not to over-specialise in our skills and experiences. We talk over the vital importance of connecting to nature for individual wellbeing, and identify some key techniques people can use to connect back to the natural world. The former Jain monk talks on the power of optimism in the face of great planetary challenges, and outlines his three key values for his vision of a sustainable and happy society: Soil, Soul and Society. We deliberate the place that money and competition could have in a fairer, more ecological society. Finally, Satish tells of his experiences from his incredible 8,000-mile peace pilgrimage to the world nuclear capitals.

54m · Published 29 Oct 15:29

Henry Blanchard left a boring corporate job at Deloitte to create an adventure sports business, set up a charity in rural Uganda, and travel the world. He now shows others how to do the same. Working with Oxford University Business School, Enterprise Nation, TEDx, and others, Henry delivers events and workshops to help people get the most out of their work and life. A social entrepreneur, he's raised more than £2million for good causes across the world, and his work has been featured by the BBC, The Guardian, Red Bull, London Evening Standard, The Telegraph and more.

In this episode, Henry tells his truths on seemingly ‘overnight success’ and reveals the grit and determination it took to create the first ever Uganda Marathon. The social entrepreneur details how you can embrace unpredictability and create new opportunities in life by finding comfort outside of your comfort zone. He offers valuable perspectives on the power of mindset in the ability to progress your projects and ideas. Most importantly, we cover how people hold themselves back from discovering and following an exciting new life direction, with Henry offering his guidance on how to take successful action.
