Apps for Diabetes Management

Jody Long is a diabetes educator with Mary Washington Healthcare Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support Services. In this episode she talks about different apps that could help you manage your diabetes, ranging from exercise to calorie trackers to meditation. 

Some of the apps Jody mentions in the podcast are the 7-minute Workout App, Calorie King, mySugr, and  Headspace.

Lactation Services at Mary Washington Healthcare

Valerie Lemelin, RN, and Donna R Rolle, RN, both started as nurses in labor and delivery before discovering a passion for helping new moms get started breastfeeding.

These certified lactation consultants had great information to share, including reasons to breastfeed, what you need to know about breast pumps, and tips for overcoming potential roadblocks. They even busted a couple of breastfeeding myths.

Karen's Life-Changing Journey at the Regional Cancer Center

Karen Bayer is a retired Fairfax County Public Schools educator of 31 years, and is also retired military. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 65, it was the beginning of a life-changing journey for the professional mobile DJ and small home business entrepreneur.

It is difficult to put into words the impact she had on the people she met, and the lives she touched throughout her cancer treatment, but we gathered Karen and her care team to talk about her journey in the hopes it will encourage others embarking on the same path.

Encouraging and Respecting Your Child's Emotions

#insideMWHC sat down with Licensed Professional Counselor LaToya Ray and Licensed Clinical Social Worker Stephanie Fidgeon from Mary Washington Hospital Snowden at Fredericksburg, to talk about strategies to help your child identify and express emotion, and steps to take if you feel like your child is struggling with depression or suicidal thoughts.

This podcast was recorded in February 2020 before the outbreak of COVID-19 closed schools and changed our way of life, but the advice from our experts will still apply.

Please know that if your child displays emotions and/or behaviors which cause concern, contacting a therapist is always a good option. If your child makes statements or displays behaviors consistent with wanting to hurt themself or others, contact 911 or bring your child to emergency department immediately.
