Dr. Books Blevins is the national expert on the history and culture of the Ozark Mountains and he's written thirteen books on the topic. We went to Missouri State University to discuss how bear hunters, hillbillies and good ol' boys defined the region. As it turns out, bear hunters played a big role it, and according to Dr. Blevins, bear hunters were the "sports stars of their era." This is one of the most interesting podcasts we've ever recorded!

Public land access is the buzzword in the outdoor world right now, but many still don't understand what the problems are because they're different in every part of the country. Hal Herring, of the Backcountry Hunters and Anglers Cast and Blast Podcast, goes into the weeds to hash out the roots of our public lands and the current threats. This is a great history lesson and an entertaining discussion from a great voice in conservation. Hal has been an outdoor writer for decades, and he's also a published book author from northern Alabama.

This week Clay is in western North Carolina sitting with some lifelong Appalachian bear houndsmen. Roy tells some great bear hunting stories and the Laurel Mountain Bear Hunters tell what Roy means to them and the roll he's played in their life.

Roy Clark, now 71, was born in East Tennessee and has been bear hunting with hounds his whole life. “My grandpa and daddy, when they started out hunting, I’d get to go with them to the 12-Mile Strip. We didn’t have anything but a log truck, camping gear and dogs. We’d walk from there – no radios or nothing. It was tough to find bears that way.” Roy has gone from primitive hunting with hounds all the way to using modern GPS collars, which have changed the game. Bear numbers are as high as they've ever been in modern times, and hound is different than 50 years ago. Roy, as a houndsman, is a living legend and you're certain to enjoy this look into Appalachian Mountain hunting culture with the Laurel Mountain Bear hunters.

Venomous snake expert, Dr. Chris Jenkins joins us this week to discuss everything you need to know about snakes to be a well-rounded woodsman. He'll answer questions like how long do rattlesnakes live, are rattlesnakes more poisonous than copperheads, rattle snake distribution, will a rattlesnake bite kill you, and should you kill them? Chris also talks about the organization he founded called the Orianne Society, which protects threatened reptiles and amphibians.
