S2 Ep105: TEXAS - The Murder of Cheryl Fergeson & The Wrongful Conviction of Clarence Brandley

1h 51m · Published 25 Feb 00:27
It all started on August 23rd 1980, in the small town of Bellville, Texas. Sixteen year old Cheryl Dee Ferguson woke up that morning and was in a rush for the first tournament of the season. The volleyball team in which she was a part of had to ride the 60 mile bus ride to Conroe, Texas. The girls were excited – until Cheryl disappeared and the game was canceled. She was eventually found in the auditorium – naked and lifeless. Unfortunately, this is not the only tragedy that came from this story. The corrupt and racist investigators that investigated this crime had their eyes set on one person, and one person only: the African American high school janitor, Clarence Brandley. This story is not just about the murder of an innocent teenager, but also about an innocent man who sat on death row for 10 years for a crime he did not commit. This is the story of Cheryl Ferguson and the Wrongful Conviction of Clarence Brandley, and you are listening to Murder in America.

Introducing SUSPECT: Vanished in the Snow

6m · Published 10 Jan 04:59
For more than three and a half decades, the disappearance of 12-year-old Jonelle Matthews was a mystery – a riddle neither authorities nor her family members could solve. The residents of her cloistered Colorado hometown had scoured every inch of prairie. Jonelle’s face had been on milk cartons nationwide. Even the President of the United States had appealed to the public for help. Still, every lead had fizzled. Every person of interest had turned out to be a dead end.

Then, in 2019, Jonelle’s remains were unearthed near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. With the discovery came a troubling new question: Had the truth been hiding in plain sight the entire time? Was the man who couldn’t stop obsessing over Jonelle’s disappearance also the person who took her? From Campside Media and Wondery comes season two of SUSPECT. Former CNN reporter Ashley Fantz and executive producers Matthew Shaer and Eric Benson (Suspect, Over My Dead Body) dig into one of the most mind-bending cold cases in modern history, in an attempt to separate fact and fiction, compulsion from guilt, and true-crime fandom from a motive for murder.

S2 Ep99: TEXAS - The University of Texas Tower Shooting (PT 1)

1h 11m · Published 06 Jan 22:48
At approximately 11:35 am on August 1, 1966, Charles Whitman arrived at the University of Texas at Austin campus where he posed as a research assistant and told a security guard he was there to deliver equipment. He climbed twenty-eight floors of the UT tower and emerged on the observation deck where for ninety-six minutes he opened fire on innocent people below. In those ninety-six minutes, Whitman killed sixteen people, and injured thirty-one. The incident, which became known as the "UT Tower Sniper" shooting, was one of the first high-profile mass shootings in American history and sparked a national conversation about gun violence and mental health. The Texas Tower shooting remains one of the most brutal mass shootings in United States history, and was considered the deadliest on a college campus until the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007. This is the story of Charles Whitman and you are listening to Murder in America.

Millions of people take this road every single day, and it’s also the main road used to haul drugs into the United States. And after awhile this man’s crimes started to escalate - first to sexual assaults, then finally to murder - and he was given the new name of the I-5 killer.
