Ted Lasso S2E10: Funerals Are So Weird

1h 1m · Published 08 Nov 14:46
Welcome back to the Dogtrack, Greyhounds! In this episode Marisa, Christian, and Brett have a conversation about Season 2, Episode 10: No Weddings and a Funeral.

This episode is one of our absolute favorites of the entire series! As we navigate both the hilarity and the heaviness of this episode, we discuss the weirdness of funerals, the end of Sam and Rebecca's relationship, and the respective breakdowns and breakthroughs of Ted and Rebecca.

We also talk a bit about shoes (the expensive and the uncomfortable), the awkwardness of grief, the cultural staying power of the almighty Rick Roll, and the masterful music choices in this episode.

This Is Thundergong! (with Billy Brimblecom Jr.)

43m · Published 25 Oct 16:48
Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In this episode Christian and Brett have a conversation with Billy Brimblecom, Jr., who is the Executive Director of the Steps of Faith Foundation — an organization that provides prosthetic limbs for amputees who can’t otherwise afford them.

We chatted with Billy about his experience as an amputee, the work that Steps of Faith is doing, and their upcoming Thundergong! charity concert that will be hosted by Billy’s longtime friend, Jason Sudeikis. He also shares with us his reaction after reading the Ted Lasso pilot, muses on what a Portlandia spin-off would be like for Kansas City, and chronicles a funny experience he recently had with Jason and Brendan Hunt while hanging out in Richmond late one night.

The Hidden Cost of Blazing Your Own Trail (with USWNT legend Briana Scurry)

36m · Published 14 Sep 15:52
Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In this episode Christian and Brett have a conversation with soccer icon Briana Scurry. Briana is best-known for her accomplishments as the starting goalkeeper for the United States Women's National Team, where she helped the squad win a World Cup and two Olympic gold medals.

Briana is currently an assistant coach for the Washington Spirit of the National Women's Soccer League and recently released a memoir titled MY GREATEST SAVE. In the book, she chronicles her journey from a gifted athletic kid growing up in Minneapolis to her triumph as a legendary goalkeeper. She also details her experience as a gay African-American woman making strides and spearheading change in a sport that was at the time predominately-white, predominately-suburban sport.

In our conversation with Briana, we discussed her story and got into many of the themes of the book, including perseverance, mental health, and, ultimately – hope (be advised that there is some discussion of suicidal ideation in this episode). We also chatted about some of the similarities between her high school soccer coach and Ted Lasso. And Briana revealed which of her soccer-playing friends she'd most like to see make a cameo appearance on the show!

Pick up Briana's incredible book (or download the audiobook), MY GREATEST SAVE, wherever you buy such things. We can't recommend it highly enough.

Ted Lasso S2E9: Reason Is Powerless in the Expression of Love

49m · Published 07 Sep 15:46
WE'RE BACK ON THE DOGTRACK, GREYHOUNDS! In this episode Marisa, Christian, and Brett have a conversation about Season 2, Episode 9: Beard After Hours.

As we make our way through this absurd episode of Ted Lasso, we talk about the major differences in tone, style, and aesthetic between this offering and every other installment of this incredible show.

Our discussion brought up a few interesting questions, like: what (if anything) do creators owe fans of their work (if anything), and how charitable should fans be when presented with art that contrasts from a creator's usual offering?

The three of us each had different reactions to this admittedly divisive episode, but our conversation helped us to mine a few luminous gems from the general darkness of the late-night Beard saga.

We also took some time to examine what we learned about the character of Beard in this episode–particularly when it comes to his relationship with Jane and the things in his life which bring him meaning.

There was also a record-amount of music used in this episode, and we know it goes without saying, but we definitely took some time to discuss a bunch of the needle drops as well.

35m · Published 16 Aug 08:00
Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! This week are excited to present a recent podcast episode from our friends over at Twenty Thousand Hertz – which just so happens to cover the topic of sound design in Ted Lasso!

We'll be back next week with our conversation about Season 2, Episode 9 "Beard After Hours." But we couldn't be more thrilled to rejoin your podcast feeds this week with this fantastic episode.

Twenty Thousand Hertz is an award-winning podcast that reveals the stories behind the world's most recognizable and interesting sounds. The show is a product of world’s leading sound design studio, De Facto Sound - which regularly designs projects for worldwide brands like Nike, Bose, Netflix, and HBO.

From Twenty Thousand Hertz's Show Description:

"Ted Lasso is about more than just an incompetent soccer coach–it's about overcoming challenges by working together. And that's exactly what the show's sound team had to do when the pandemic hit just two episodes in.

From creating crowds of thousands using just a few voices, to recording actors in their own closets, they managed to turn lockdown into an opportunity for innovation. Featuring Ted Lasso's Supervising Sound Editor Brent Findley and Dialog Editor Bernard Weiser."

Re-release: A Ted Lasso BBQ Redux (with Adrian Miller)

23m · Published 20 Jul 15:37
Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! This episode is a re-release of our conversation with award-winning chef and barbecue historian Adrian Miller, aka the Soul Food Scholar.

Christian takes just a moment to revel in his correct prediction that Miller's most recent book, Black Smoke, would win a James Beard Book Award. Christian also Brett an update on what he's been smoking this summer and shares about his recent experiences testing outdoor cooking equipment as part of his gig as a writer and editor at Fatherly.

Our guest, Adrian Miller, is an author and speaker who drops barbecue knowledge like hot biscuits. We spoke with Adrian about the cultural and historical origins of barbecue in America and discussed the barbecue scene's latest efforts to pay homage to its rich and diverse past.

Consider this your warning that this episode may induce meat sweats and involuntary drooling.

LGBT+ Inclusion in Sports Media (with Jon Holmes)

46m · Published 14 Jun 15:00
Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In this episode Christian and Brett have a conversation with journalist Jon Holmes. Jon is the founder of Sports Media LGBT+, an organization that advocates for inclusion in media and journalism specifically, and sports in general.

Jon is an experienced journalist and writer, and for many years led Sky Sports’ support for Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign. He launched Sports Media LGBT+ in August 2017 with the idea to harness the power of media and journalism in order to advocate for and amplify the voices of athletes, coaches, officials, administrators, and all others involved in sport who are LGBT+.

In our conversation with Jon, we discussed the origins of Sports Media LGBT+, inclusion in sports media, supporters groups, and football clubs in general, as well as the recent coverage of 17-year-old Jake Daniels, the Blackpool FC midfielder who became the UK’s first active male professional footballer to come out publicly as gay in May 2022.

Of course, Jon is also a fan of Ted Lasso, so we took some time to chat with him about his love for the show, its lack of representation when it comes to gay and queer characters, and the ways in which Ted Lasso (the show and the character) helps to address and dismantle toxic masculinity in sport.

Ted Lasso S2E8, Part 2: You Have to Put Your Heart Out There

44m · Published 07 Jun 08:00
Welcome back to the Dogtrack, Greyhounds! In this episode Marisa, Christian, and Brett have part two of a two-part conversation about part Season 2, Episode 8: Man City.

If you haven't already listened to part one of this series, go back and get caught up before continuing.

In this episode, Christian gives us a ton of background on the soccer in this episode. We discuss the importance of football matches played at Wembley Stadium and appreciate the accuracy with which the Man City fans were represented.

We notice that Ted has begun to take Dr. Sharon's advice, process THAT SCENE with Jamie and his father, and talk about the ways that various traumas are informing the ways our beloved characters move through the world.

There's also a pretty lengthy discussion of Rodgers and Hart's "Blue Moon," and we reveal a secret connection between the Ted Lasso universe and Antonín Dvořák's Ninth Symphony.

A Pro Footballer on the Set of Ted Lasso (with Eniola Aluko)

32m · Published 31 May 08:00
Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In this episode Marisa and Christian have a conversation with former England National Team player and current Sporting Director of Angel City FC, Eniola Aluko!

Ted Lasso fans may also recognize Eniola from her brief cameo appearance on the show in Season 2, Episode 5: "Rainbow." Eniola appears as a player in the scene where Roy and Ted encourage Isaac to participate in a pickup football match to help him find his joy in the game again.

Of course, it didn't take much acting for Eniola to look like one of the best players on the pitch. Though she recently retired from playing professionally, Eniola played for some of the biggest clubs in the world including the England & Great Britain National Teams, Chelsea, and Juventus. Post-retirement, she has worked as a television commentator and football executive, and is currently the Sporting Director of NWSL club Angel City FC in Los Angeles, California.

We chatted with Eniola about her experience on the Ted Lasso set, her career in professional football, and the incredible start that Angel City FC have experienced during their inaugural season in the National Women's Soccer League.

Ted Lasso S2E8, Part 1: This Was Not A Date

48m · Published 24 May 19:59
Welcome back to the Dogtrack, Greyhounds! In this episode Marisa, Christian, and Brett have part one of a two-part conversation about part Season 2, Episode 8: Man City.

Yes, you read that right – so much happened in this episode that we thought it would be best to split up our conversation into two parts so that we could be sure to cover everything.

We spend some time appreciating the visuals and the music in the magnificent haircut scene, talk a lot about fathers and sons (so tricky – they should really write songs about it), and discuss the development of two awkward-but-sweet relationships in this episode: one platonic (Ted & Sharon), and one romantic (Rebecca & Sam).

We also marvel at that AMAZING Wizard of Oz themed pinball machine, put some respect on Dr. Sharon's vocal prowess, and recognize that there ain't no policy like a hospital policy, 'cuz a hospital policy don't stop.
