Millionaire ElisabethCongdon and her nurse,VelmaPietila, were found murdered in their home in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1977. Police learned thatCongdon’s daughter Marjorie Caldwell had a long history of financial problems and debt. Based on the evidence collected in the investigation, Caldwell and her husband Roger were arrested. However, at trial Caldwell was acquitted and Roger's conviction was overturned by the supreme court five years later.

Tom Emmer, a Minnesota Republican and former head of the House GOP's campaign arm, withdrew from the race. Emmer failed to garner support roughly 20 firm detractors. The conference will now regroup in an effort to find a new path forward.
