Episode 003 - Mentoring as a relationship

36m · Be the Adult You Needed as a Child · 22 Mar 17:08

I speak with a mentor and her mentee. We learn a bit about their relationship, how it grew, and what it means to both of them. I don't think there is too much to unpack on what they speak about. It is honest and open and in my opinion what we all are working toward when we look at the mentor/mentee relationship. Thank you Jess and Julian for taking the time to share your relationship with us and hopefully people get a lot out of hearing you share your story.

The Struggle NEEDS to be REAL

This episode takes a look at the idea that struggle helps people learn. It forces the internalization of information and knowledge. This requires a paradigm shift for mentors. We often want to impart our knowledge to the mentee but if knowledge is just told to or given directly to a person, it is not always taken in deeply enough to sink in.

I am also adding this reference to a series of essays that were published in the Washington Post. They come from a group of 20+ high school biology teachers who took on a challenge of writing an essay on a shared prompt, "What is the value in letting students struggle in class?" This is a great insight into our topic.

Episode 2 - Mentor Interview Pei-Tzu Lin

In this episode, we have a discussion with a mentor I have worked with previously. Pei has some great insight being from Taiwan, her perspective on mentoring and the role she can play shows universal truth to the power of mentoring and what makes it so important. THANKS Pei!
