Interviews With Travel Families | Joyce Degroot

27m · Interviews With Travel Families · 02 Sep 16:56

In our first Travel Family Interview we talk to Joyce Degroot from her current home in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.

Joyce and her partner Enzo, and their two little ones are truly a multinational family. Joyce is both a Canadian and an American Citizen and Enzo is Peruvian. Their children are American and Peruvian. They have recently moved from Lima, Peru to Playa Del Carmen Mexico.

They slow travel, spending many months at a time at a single location to save money and get a feel for the culture. Joyce is a true digital Nomad who teaches English online and does copywriting for a school. Enzo walks a different path, selling his handmade Peruvian jewelry on etsy and at local shops, wherever home is that month.

In this video Joyce will give us a detailed look at life as a digital nomad traveling family including: her monthly budgets, expenses and income.

If you are wondering about living as a full time travel family and want to know more, feel free to reach out to Joyce, or ourselves, in our comments. We’ll be happy to answer any questions you might have or steer you in the right direction.

Nova Scotia's Wandering Wilsons | Slow Travelling Canadas Atlantic Playground

They are  a family of adventure and fun ambassadors. They have circumvented our current pandemic by exploring Canada’s Atlantic playground, Nova Scotia.

They thrive on meeting the locals, exploring hidden adventures, chasing waterfalls, savouring Nova Scotia's Museums, learning the art of camping, discovering lighthouse trails as a guilty pleasure, making road trip lists and capturing it all in action photography; in hopes that  families, friends, newcomers  and Nova Scotians will get out and explore this ocean playland. More than that, they meet the greatest treasures of Nova Scotia, it's people. Nova Scotians have embraced and delighted them and been very kind to their little family.

They didn't decide to travel across Nova Scotia because of the pandemic, we thought Nova Scotia needed them wandering all over and discovering it's charms, so they could teach it's treasures to their little Nova Scotian, Nia.

Not too long ago they were business owners, who were overworked and tired, and adventures were few and far between. Today life is a lot different and we treasure our fun times together. Currently Dihlan and Nia are homeschooled and that allows flexibility for adventuring and chasing some good ole fun. David works as a medical equipment technician at CanMed and Natalie is a business advisor with the Centre for Women in Business and Student Entrepreneurship Program Manager at Mount St. Vincent University!

Their goal is for people to see that adventure is accessible for all families, to spark adventure in people no matter their age, and to be “ambassadors of adventure diversity”.

They started Novel Excursion Travel to help families travel with purpose by inspiring people to be more mindful about their impact while traveling and being intentional with how they interact with a culture and environment.

Their vision is to change the world one nameless stranger at a time by bridging cultures through travel, education, and service. They are based in Devine, Texas (near San Antonio) and travel slowly each year, up to 90 days at a time.

Before returning to Texas for our families, they were based in Germany and traveled to 20 countries as a family. Collectively, we have been to 31 countries and 37 states.
