S2E11 The Toxic Language of "Wellness Culture"

In the penultimate episode of Season 2, I speak to Maxine Ali, a health writer, linguist and body image PhD researcher and she uses her platform to dissect the language of health and wellness, looking into its toxic and sexist sub-messaging. After falling hard into the clean eating culture whilst being a health journalist for a well-known women’s health magazine, Maxine left the industry in 2017 to refocus her writing and research.

Maxine and I discuss:

  • Gender disparities and the lack of visual representation of diverse body types in wellness culture - how this exacerbates insecurities and reinforces patriarchal ideals of beauty and femininity.
  • How the ‘self-improvement’ culture leads from the notion that the fault is always with the individual, never the institution or systems that uphold it
  • The ugly side to body positivity and toxic positivity in health communication.
  • How wellness culture reframes restriction and how to recognise when diet culture is silently co-opting the non-diet language

S2E10 Why You Need to Know About the Menopausal Transition

In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking to Dr Jenn Salib Huber, dietitian, naturopathic doctor and intuitive eating coach. Jenn provides expert health and hormone support to women in midlife without a side of diet culture!

Every woman is going to go through menopause at some point in their life, often though it is coupled with trouble sleeping, multitasking, thinking straight and generally coping with everyday life. This can be very stressful and cause depressive symptoms for many women, along with losing zest for life, and many women resort to using antidepressants. So it’s about time we spoke about it!

Jenn and I discussed:

  • Barriers to discussing the menopause
  • What actually is menopause and peri-menopause?
  • Symptoms
  • Early menopause
  • The hormones involved
  • Eating well for the menopause
  • Alternative therapies to dealing with severe symptoms

PLEASE be sure to give this a review, rating, and share it with someone you think would enjoy it!

S2E7 Skin Health

This week's Nutritalk sees me speaking to Registered Nutritional Therapist, Louise Goulding, who specialises in skin health.

The skin has been a hot topic as of recent, especially off the back of the pandemic with just our faces constantly on zoom calls. Our skin is often a reflection of our internal health.  Poor digestion, hormonal imbalances, stress and toxin exposure can all affect it.  But our different diets, lifestyles, environment and genetics mean that we can’t take a ‘one size fits all’ approach to tackling skin conditions. One thing that we do know is a diet that is good for your general health is a diet that is good for your skin!

Louise discusses with us today simple and sustainable changes you can make to your diet and lifestyle today, including loading up on antioxidants, feeding those gut bugs and loving your omegas!

We also discuss:

  • Why Louise specialises in skin health
  • How to get that healthy ‘glow’
  • Nutrients for the skin
  • Skin as an indicator of health status
  • Ageing skin
  • Chemical and mineral sunscreens
  • Skin routines
  • The biggest lifestyle factors that influence skin health
