That’s Burlesque: What Is Burlesque?

Published on 1st June 2020

Welcome to That's Burlesque, the podcast where Ryan and Curly lead our celebration of the wonderful world of burlesque and the communities and cultures that it connects with.

This month we have been joined by the amazing human that is Demi Noire, to discuss what exactly is “burlesque”.

In this episode we discuss:

  • What exactly is burlesque?
  • Why some people think there is a “right way” to do burlesque, and how to move past those ideas
  • Sexuality in burlesque, and why this doesn’t necessarily mean nudity
  • Having the freedom and autonomy to create the acts you want to see performed
  • Authenticity, self expression, and the importance of having something to say (whilst still entertaining)
  • The differences between performing to make money and performing to say something important
  • Representation and relatability in burlesque, and their importance for showing people that they belong
  • The different “tribes” of burlesque, and how to ensure variety in shows
  • The commercial vs the underground, and working out which venues and productions are right for you as a performer and audience member
