How to Manage Stress: Men Get Breast Cancer Too

The stress of a cancer diagnosis is huge.  One in two people get cancer and the most common form of cancer is breast cancer.

But did you know that men get breast cancer too?  In this episode I am in conversation with writer and director of comedy drama, Neil Ben, who was diagnosed in the midst of the pandemic.  Neil is a single dad, owns his own business and has had to navigate his cancer journey too:  is that enough stress for one person?

Find out how he coped and what lessons you can learn from him.  This conversation is inspirational, funny and real.  And at the end we talk about how to know when you need to give up on something or when you need to power through.  Enjoy!  Do like and share:  this may land at just the right time to save someone's life.  And, as always, I'd love to see your comments.

How to Manage Stress: Parenting a Child with an Eating Disorder

Being a parent is one of the most stressful jobs in the world.  But not as stressful or complicated as parenting someone with an eating disorder.  I treat people with eating disorders and it is by far the most complicated and challenging condition I treat.  When it's your own child, and you are living with the consequences of the eating disorder, it takes the stress to a whole new level.  It requires a completely different type of parenting.

In this video I am in conversation with Jenny Langley whose son had anorexia at the age of 12.  She is the author of books on the subject and a lead facilitator at The Maudsley Clinic.  She not only has personal experience on the subject but is hugely knowledgeable, highly respected and runs a carer's support group.  This is a must-see video for anyone who even suspects their child has an eating disorder, or for friends or family of carer's.  It is an eye-opener.

How to Manage Stress: A Health Scare and a Break-up with Alcohol

A health scare is bad enough at the best of times.  But when you find out that alcohol - something you enjoy too much of and too often, is the cause?  Denial almost killed my guest Angus Grady who speaks honestly about how an emergency visit to A&E resulted in a 3 week stay in hospital with a life-threatening case of artrial fibrilation.  This caused his abuse of alcohol.  This made him face the truth about his problem with alcohol.  It affected his business and his relationships. And of course his health.

He has been sober now for 17 years and in this video he talks about how he achieved it and how he is a changed man - in the best of ways - because of it.  He was, as he puts it, given the gift of a new start and he wasn't going to waste it  This is a really honest, no holds barred interview from someone who had reached the bottom but made his way out.

Do comment, like and share:  you never know who else might be in denial and whose life you might save by this inspiring story.

How to Manage Stress: Suicide Prevention

I don't need to tell you how hard depression is.  Left untreated, you can start to develop thoughts about suicide.  But it does seem to be a long-term solution to a short-term problem.

Suffering in silence may seem like an option but that just makes it worse and drives the depression deeper.  If that's the case, what CAN you do to get your life back on track?

In this episode I am in conversation with life coach, international public speaker, actress, and multi-award winning voice-vibration sound healer Judith Quin who has personal experience in this.  She had what she calls a "'blip" in 2016 and reveals what led her to that place and how she got herself out.

This subject is too important to do anything other than listen carefully, absorb the important messages and to share with others.  Everybody is struggling with their private battles.  A smiling face is no evidence of all being well.  And an "I'm fine" is no indicator of things being fine at all.  Many put up a front and suffer in silence.  Be part of the solution.  Like and share.  You never know whose life it might save.

How to Manage Stress: Grief with Sue O'Brien

Grief is both an emotion and a process.  Grief affects us all at some time or another.  That much is predictable.  But what is not predictable is how it will impact us.

We are all different and it is important to honour our own grief and in this conversation with Sue O'Brien who has worked with Cruse and has a lot of experience in this area, we will explore the complexities of grief and how you can help yourself - or someone you care about - through it.

In this conversation we discuss:

- the nature of grief

- the different ways people can respond to this emotion

- how you can support yourself through the process of grief

- how not to support yourself when experiencing grief

- how you can support someone else who is bereaved

- things to say and to avoid saying
