In this episode we are joined by graphic artist Lydia Jones and discuss Pirates, the colonial world, the origins of rum, and the history of the worlds oldest cocktail "El Draque" and how it led to the modern day Mojito.   • El Draque:
  • 1 lime
  • 6 mint leaves
  • 1 oz simple syrup
  • 2 oz rum
  • Place mint leaves in a mixing glass. Cut lime into chunks and place in mixing glass. Add simple syrup and muddle. Add rum and stir. Strain into a glass of your choosing and garnish with lime slice and fresh mint sprigs (remember to slap the mint to release the oils)
  • Mojito:
  • 6 mint leaves
  • 1 oz simple syrup
  • .75 oz lime juice
  • 2 oz rum
  • club soda
  • Place mint leaves in bottom of a Collins glass. Add simple syrup and muddle (take care not to pulverize the mint leaves. Add lime juice and rum. Fill glass with Ice. Place a shaker tin over the top of the glass and give the drink 1-2 shakes. Top with club soda. Garnish with lime wedge and a few mint sprigs.

2oz Brandy
2 dash bitters
1 sugar cube
1 dash nutmeg


Place sugar cube in a mixing glass. Add bitters and nutmeg. Muddle. Add brandy and ice. Stir until chilled and serve in a chilled Coupe.

The Brandy Crusta (How to Mix Drinks by Jerry Thomas 1862)
3-4 dashes of gum syrup
2 dashes bitters
2 oz Brandy
1-2 dashes Curacoa
1-2 dash lemonjuice

Add ingredients to a mixing glass. Stir until chilled. Garnish with a sugar rim and lemon peel lining the inner rim of the glass.

Sidecar (Cocktails: How to Mix them by Robert Vermeire 1922)
.75 oz Brandy
.75 oz Lemon Juice
.75 oz Cointreau

Shake well with Ice. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with sugar rim. Optional Orange peel garnish.

1 1/3 Vodka Citron
1/2 oz Cointreau
1/2 oz Fresh lime juice
1 oz Cranberry juice

Kamikaze
1/3 oz Vodka
1/3 oz Lime juice
1/3 oz Triple Sec

The Harpooner Cocktail
1 ½ oz vodka or rum
2 oz of cranberry juice
Optional squeeze of lime juice
Garnished with a lime wedge

The Cosmopolitan Daisy
1 1⁄2 oz Beefeater Gin
1⁄2 oz Cointreau
Juice of 1 Lemon
1 tsp Raspberry Syrup (homemade)

Raspberry Syrup:
1lb raspberries
2 cups water
1 cup sugar

Rinse raspberries then place in medium sauce pan. Add water and bring to a boil. Reduce to medium simmer and simmer until raspberries lose color. Skim any foam from top and stir occasionally. Strain liquid into a separate container. Place liquid back into saucepan and add sugar. Simmer and stir until sugar is completely dissolved.
