10. Sax in Space

TWEETS- follow Haley and Venmo generously to support the luxurious lifestyles of rescued cats like Shambles and Bitty: @feederofcats

Here are some wonderful tweets about these cat pals:

  • Shambles ruining his ball-removal appointment
  • Smug Bitty being smug

Our main chat with Rob f***ing Cope is all about SPACE. He tries to convince Nancy of the wonder of space, rather than the horror of space - which is, objectively, simply TOO BIG.

Rob-recommended-reading included ‘Carrying the Fire’ by Michael Collins, and ‘Endurance’ by Scott Kelly. We also all respect the hell out of playing saxophone in space.

Follow Rob for primo sax and cats content: @rcope88

And listen to the Jazz Podcast! Which Rob & Tara *actually* publish episodes of, unlike us, the lazy goons at ‘Thanks, I Love It!’ HQ.

Nancy mentioned a bunch of sci-fi including Contact, Arrival, Battlestar Galactica, and Interstellar.

Huw mentioned his Marc Rebillet alarm clock.

12. A (potato) waffle with Matthew Crosby

It's a comedy (and carb) bonanza this week, with the wonderful Matthew Crosby, who is one third of Pappy's! We still don't know quite how that happened.

TWEETS - this week the ‘tweet’ is actually an instagram reel to introduce you to the Trusty Hogs podcast. In this clip, we hear about ‘Helen’s stairwell incident’. Listen to episode 86 of Trusty Hogs for the full, haunting story.

In our interview with Matthew, he chose to sing the praises of potatoes, which he declares to be the most versatile vegetable, and in fact most versatile thing in the known universe. We also mention:

  • James Acaster's new podcast 'Springleaf'
  • The ultimate weirdness of encountering someone who you've listened to for hours on podcasts (chiefly Jimmy Pardo of 'Never Not Funny' fame)
  • This video about potato dishes from around the world, inexplicably made by Business Insider.
  • The Norwegian lefse, shown in this video
  • Air-fried gnocchi
  • Bonus Carb Content - a Georgian man called Georgy makes so much kachapuri

In a blatant attempt to copy the 'Beckenham Recs' feature from Matthew and Ed Gamble's Radio X show, Nancy tries to 'Bec Rec' some podcasts to Matthew.

  • Shameless and their 'Scandal' episodes (because it reminds Nancy of Hollywood Crime Scene)
  • That’s Messed Up, an SVU podcast
  • Ruined, where scared people can have horror films spoiled for them
  • Lolita Podcast and Inside Mensa by Jamie Loftus
  • Bonus Bec Rec from Matthew - Earshot- 'A succulent Chinese meal'

Please check out the charity 'Greener and Cleaner' who do great work in south London to make green living and working the norm. Find them online https://www.greenerandcleaner.co.uk and on Instagram.

BONUS: Shroom for a Bonus Chat?

Mushrooms, natural dyes, and how not to poison yourself! In this extra little snippet of our chat with Elly (@takeitupwearitout), we quizzed her about how you dye fabric with mushrooms. Nancy is not a fan of mushrooms, and has vowed to never knowingly eat a mushroom and enjoy it- but has put that grudge aside, because it's all in aid of crafting.

11. Wear It, Wandle It

Let's have a much needed chat about fabric, the natural world and the garment industry, with Elly aka Take It Up Wear It Out! Elly is a textile artist whose creations are inspired by the natural world. Often the river Wandle runs through her work, which makes sense, as it’s a jewel in South London’s crown. We touch on some difficult truths related to poverty at home and abroad, 2013’s catastrophically deadly Rana Plaza collapse, pollution, ‘wear it once’ culture, aaaaand massive companies that don’t pay tax. But there is an awful lot to love in this dive into the waters of regenerative fashion.

Firstly - TWEETS

  • Check out what @kit_yates_maths found in his chicken feed bin recently, in this thread.
  • Nancy allows Huw to submit a bonus tweet, because it is about ITALIAN DRAG.

In our chat with Elly we talked about:

  • Celia Pym
  • Kate Secules
  • Flora Collingwood Norris
  • Fashion Revolution - pushing for transparency with the #whomademyclothes campaign
  • Elly’s 3D textile piece ‘Unnatural’ that was submitted to the Mr X Stitch Contemporary Needlework Prize.
  • Elly’s post on Regenerative Fashion
  • Aja Barber. Read Aja’s book, 'Consumed'.
  • Follow Elly for updates about her creative work and opportunities to get involved in wandering the Wandle (and even stitching the Wandle). You can also buy her zine about ‘Unnatural’ there to show your support for her work.

At the end of the episode we give some on-theme recommendations…

  • Earlier this year, Nancy went to the Threads Festival at Sunny Bank Mills (home of the Sewing Bee!) and lost her mind playing with a big industrial loom. She also spotted Alex Vincent’s jewelery, created from brambles.
  • Any mention of the River Wandle makes us think about the Rivers of London novels, by Ben Aaronovitch.

Stream Rob Cope's new single 'Up' from his upcoming album Gemini: https://orcd.co/m2vvzqo

We bring up music pals and previous Jazz Podcast guests:

  • Tom Varrall (guitarist for Jamie Cullum and Ableton legend)
  • Hattie Whitehead (singer-songwriter who also does an incredible Joni Mitchell)
  • Matt Roberts (trumpet player for Gentlemen's Dub Club and arranger extraordinaire)
  • Pete Lee (our piano man with the finest hair in jazz)
  • Rachel Clark (a.k.a. Ms ABBA, and currently on tour with Carly Rae Jepsen!)

Nancy mentions The Comedian's Comedian Podcast as a good pod for any saxophonist with a lot of driving and introspection to do- '...are you happy???'

Nancy was nice to Huw for about a minute and a half before the mask slipped. Sorry Huw.
