46m · Therapy Chat · 08 Mar 10:45

Welcome back to Therapy Chat! If you've ever thought, "I know I need to set a boundary, but I don't know how to do it," or "I know what I should do/say, but why can't I seem to make myself do it?" then you'll love this episode. This week's guest, Juliane Taylor Shore, wrote the book, "Setting Boundaries That Stick: How Neurobiology Can Help You Rewire Your Brain to Help You Feel Safe, Connected and Empowered," which addresses the challenge of setting boundaries,which so many of us find confusing these days. In our conversation you'll hear Jules explain what the different types of boundaries are, how to set them and what's needed to make them stick. Jules is one of the speakers at this year's Psychotherapy Networker! Are you going? Save $50 using the link in the Show Notes!

Juliane Taylor Shore, LMFT, LPC, SEP, is a therapist, author, and teacher who is creating spaces where people can move into more self-compassion, self-trust, empowerment, and integrity. She regularly teaches and speaks to people from all around the world and translates new understandings in neurobiology into practices that can support brain change. She came into the therapy world as a client who argued that feelings didn’t matter only to find herself all these years later having followed neuroscience to the obvious conclusion: we are really feeling and meaning making beings driven by our interdependence. She believes that embracing that reality is key to finding purpose and deep joy. She is the author of Setting Boundaries that Stick: How Neurobiology Can Help You Rewire Your Brain to Feel Safe, Connected and Empowered. She is an associate Instructor with the Coherence Institute and a core faculty member with Therapy Wisdom and Jules co-hosts Why Does My Partner...? Podcast with Rebecca Wong and Vickey Easa.

434: Shame As An Adaptation To Trauma + Attachment Wounds with Dr. Janina Fisher

This week's episode is the fourth of five live interviews recorded live at Psychotherapy Networker Symposium in March. This week's guest is someone I have admired and learned from for years, Dr. Janina Fisher! Janina Fisher was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Networker this year.

I was so honored to be able to sit down with her face to face to discuss a topic she spoke about at the conference,the challenge of how shame shows up in our lives and can present obstacles along our healing paths. I shared some of my observations from my own lived experience of the insidious way shame can creep in without us even realizing its impact, and Janina spoke about shame as a somatic adaptation, and how trauma therapists can work with shame effectively to help clients who are unconsciously operating and responding from that space.

I was so grateful to speak with this amazing teacher who has done so much for the field of trauma therapy over more than 30 years! Because of some tech issues, this is a shorter episode than usual. Many valuable nuggets for therapists and anyone who wants to understand how shame can insidiously take over and get in the way of how we want to live our lives!

433: Decolonizing Mental Health With Dr. Shawna Murray-Browne

This week's episode, recorded live at Psychotherapy Networker in March, features a very special guest: Dr. Shawna Murray Browne, LCSW-C. I was so fortunate to spend time with Shawna as she spoke about what the process of decolonization and reconnecting to the land can look like. Her course, Decolonizing Therapy for Black Folks, was so deeply impactful for me, and I barely scratched the surface of it beginning four years ago. In our conversation we both shared about our personal experiences during our journeys toward decolonization, touching on many meaningful milestones along the way. I deeply admire Dr. Shawna Murray Browne, LCSW-C and I hope you will be equally inspired when you listen to or watch this episode of Therapy Chat.

Listen to our conversation to learn about Shawna's training program in her Liberatory framework teaching therapists to recognize how our field is influenced by colonization and what we can do to begin working from a decolonization perspective. She speaks about how trauma can be transcended through this collective healing process and how she works with leaders and organizations to decolonize their ways of practicing. She paints an optimistic and hopeful picture of the resources available to assist those who don't have the means to access therapy, and describes some of the many valuable community resources available in her home city of Baltimore.

430: Therapists And Toxic Business Relationships - With Kelly Higdon + Miranda Palmer

Therapists - are you in a toxic business relationship? This week I'm covering why many therapy practices are struggling to stay afloat. Kelly Higdon, LMFT and Miranda Palmer, LMFT are two therapists and business coaches who co-own ZynnyMe and lead Business School for Therapists.

They've been keeping up with the factors affecting therapist wellbeing for years! In our conversation we discuss how therapists and clients are being misled and mistreated by companies that don't have our best interests in mind. If you've unwittingly entered into a toxic relationship with an abusive business entity, you'll want to listen to this episode and take back your power!

Some of the topics we covered in this episode:

  • Tech companies offering mental health treatment that is misaligned with therapist ethics and best practices, with potential HIPAA (and other) liability passed on to the therapist;
  • Insurance companies and the companies that negotiate their fees making huge profits while providers are paid less and consumers pay more for health insurance;
  • How our field conditions us into “learned helplessness” in the face of such issues;
  • Things therapists need to consider to protect our clients and ourselves;
  • What we can do to challenge the ways the tech industry is “disrupting” the mental health field; and much more.
