Found Nature Artist & Photographer Turns One-A-Day Project Into New Career, with Mary Jo Hoffman

1h 16m · Women with Cool Jobs · 01 May 07:00

More than 12 years after Mary Jo Hoffman originally committed to a daily art project where she found something in nature that would inspire her and then photograph it, she is still going strong and hasn't missed a single day. She shared these images on her blog Still -- one image, daily, of gathered natural objects found near her.

A former aeronautical engineer, Mary Jo Hoffman, wanted to add some creativity to her life while being home with her two children. Every walk with her kids or my dog would turn into a STILL blog treasure hunt.

Mary Jo's one-a-day project turned into a new career in the creative arts. She went from sharing her images on her blog, to collaboration with designers, plus organizations and companies like: Martha Stewart, Midwest Living, the Scottish National Opera, Target Corporation, West Elm, and Better Homes & Gardens.

This daily practice has allowed her so many unexpected blessings and in a different understanding of nature and the world we live in. She shares her idea of radical incrementalism and explains how we all can tap into our creativity by doing a little bit everyday. She also discusses her creative process and how she approaches the business side of making her art and sharing it with the world.

You can find her book STILL: The Art of Noticing to learn more about her story, her creative process, and her gorgeous artwork.

Chemical Biologist, Conservationist, & National Geographic Explorer, with Dr. Rosa Vasquez Espinoza

Peruvian chemical biologist, conservationist, and National Geographic Explorer, Dr. Rosa Vasquez Espinoza, combines science and storytelling to share the fascinating conservation work she is doing in the Amazon Rainforest.

Dr. Rosa founded the nonprofit Amazon Research Internacional and is currently studying stingless bees -- leading the first chemical characterization of Amazonian stingless bees and medicinal honey in Peru. Her work takes her from working with native experts deep in the Amazon forests, to collaborating with some the best minds in science, to sharing on social media what a scientist looks like -- with cute earrings, a love for native infused fashion, and a love of dance.

She has journeyed from discovering novel antibiotics and green chemistry solutions during her Ph.D. to positively influencing conservation law and leading innovative expeditions. Today, Dr. Rosa travels to the most extreme environments on the planet -- from the Amazon Rainforest; to Yellowstone’s acidic, boiling waters; to Alaska’s frozen lakes -- searching for new biodiversity and interconnecting science with indigenous knowledge to create positive changes in the world.

You can help! Her current project (starting June 2024) helps Peruvian women and girls develop their own stingless-beekeeping businesses that empower these women and their families, as well as help sustain the Amazon Rainforest.
