The Struggle is Real: Challenges of Christian Marriage (Husbands edition)

1h 49m · BOOKS, BIBLE, BALLOTS, & BEATS · 18 Sep 01:40

In this second edition of Books, Bible, Ballots, & Beats, I have a conversation with some of my closest married brothers about the struggles that Black Christian husbands face in marriage today. In this episode I bring on the homies Darryl Roberts, Eric Davis, Mychal Harris, and Albert Curley III. All of which are young married black males who are familiar with my marriage and I with theirs. This episode centers on Ephesians 5:25 - "Husbands love your wives as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her." In centering on this scripture, we engage the questions: Do husbands know how to love their wives? Are examples of marriage available to us to mentor us in how to be married or are they now scarce? In what ways does today's culture influence marriage in ways that may present a challenge to the Black Christian husbands considering the influence of social media, gender roles, and the awareness of patriarchy?

The Place Condition & Situation of the African American Male Today

In episode 3 of Books, Bible, Ballots, & Beats we discuss the status and existential circumstance of the African American male in today's American society. This episode is inspired by the controversial book "The Making of a Slave: The Willie Lynch Letter." Despite this works controversy and its rejection through the research of scholars, this book has not been completely ignored by some African American males who have experienced what is articulated in its context. To help me parse this out, I bring on guest Al Curley (from episode 2), Duke Anderson, and TJ Randall, we discuss the subject matter in addressing the following questions: What is Black manhood? Is the African American male being "emasculated" in liberal society? Does feminist ideology in some way "thingify" the Black male or is it another issue at work? Was the context of the "Willie Lynch" ideology, regardless of his existence or not, effective? And if so, does its effectiveness make Lynch a "real" threat to the African American male?
