I Can't Imagine How That Feels: Empathizing Without Owning

52m · Calibama Talking with Chef Lorious · 13 Oct 07:00

We all want to be heard. We all want to be understood. Sometimes, however, despite our best intentions, we just don't quite get it when we hear about the plight or experiences of others. We all have different backgrounds and experiences. To empathize with someone is to feel for them, but it doesn't mean you have to own their feelings. Empathizing also doesn't mean that you're guilty. It just means you see someone in pain and you care. In this day and age, empathy is hard to come by. Mama VJ and I talk about it today in a real heart to heart discussion. Enjoy!

I Kinda Had Something Else In Mind: Breaking from Family Traditions

The holidays are upon us and that means family traditions. But sometimes you want to do something different; you want to start a new tradition...or maybe you just want to do something different this year. Covid has given us all an opportunity to reassess how we will celebrate in 2020. Today Mama VJ and I are joined by a special guest - Edward Coles. Edward comes from a ministerial family and is a fourth-generation preacher in the Church of God in Christ (COGIC). He has pastored for 29 years and serves as the Assistant to the Bishop of the Washington DC Jurisdiction COGIC. Pastor Edward is a family man, married for 39 years with children and grandchildren whom he loves dearly. Coming from a family with a rich legacy, Pastor Edward knows a few things about family traditions...but he’s also not afraid to switch it up. He’s the perfect guest to share in this conversation. Enjoy!!

When Good People Do Bad Things

We’ve all heard it: “Good people can do bad things”. So is that an excuse for bad behavior or is it a realization of the flaws in our humanity? If you’re a “godly” person is it possible to do something “ungodly”...and if so, what does that really mean?? Mama VJ and I have a real and raw conversation about this today. Take a listen and challenge what you always thought.
