Criminal Justice Reform is one of the more pressing issues currently facing this nation. Our next speaker, Dr. James Bolen is a retired Chicago Police Officer who seeks to share his ideas on this matter. His book, FIXING THIS BROKEN THING: The American Criminal Justice System, not only offers solutions but explains how to pay for such without raising taxes or diverting funds from any other governmental function.
James believes the most effective tool for addressing issues of crime and disorder in any neighborhood is an effective police/community partnership. “We-the-People” cannot depend upon our elected employees to affect any REAL change in this system. We must seize control of our democratic republic and effectively guide our elected employees in a manner that holds them accountable to “Us” as opposed to any special interest groups. Our criminal courtrooms should not be arenas for competition; they should be fact-finding exercises in pursuit of the truth. Police Academy training should be just as challenging as “Old School” Marine Corps Boot Camp. We should demand/expect Quality, not quantity. The badge, shield, star, etc… worn by police officers do not represent power: the power is in the law. What a police officer has is an Awesome responsibility and that fact should be of paramount importance from beginning to end in the career of law enforcement professional.
