Don't Stop Beerlieving Episode 9 - A Beer-Paired Menu for Me N U!

22m · Don't Stop Beerlieving · 26 Feb 05:00

Michael and Chris address last week's challenge and Michael discusses a bit about his homebrew set up and his recipe.

Michael then delves into the beginnings of beer and food pairing, a key point of Cicerone training, and how one might try to enhance not only their experience with beer but also their experience with food.

Beer and food pairing is done through complementing different flavors or aromas in both, or contrasting them. A third method, and the most fun, is trying to create completely new flavors from the pairing. Michael talks through his own experience with pairing food with different alcohols, not just beer but wine and mead as well.

A natural next step after attempting to cook with beer, the guys hope that you definitely try this at home! Give them your hot takes for this week's challenge!

Don't Stop Beelieving Episode 12 - Season 1 Finale, Can You Beerlieve It?

What's up, Beerlievers!
Michael and Chris are back for the season 1 finale amidst the COVID-19 crisis. They encourage you to STAY SAFE above all, but in your self-quarantine, try to give patronage to small breweries that are struggling with having to close their taprooms. Everyone's struggling, so a good reason to pick up some cans to go or from the store and head home. Michael talks about what he's currently drinking, Fire Emoji IPA from Vanish Brewing. A beautiful color and haze with a persistent pillowy head paired with a nice, solid hop bitterness, it is a must-try!
Michael and Chris revisit predictions about the industry that they had in Episode 1. Did you notice the market changing? Did you like that change? Chris talks about what it means to be a "craft brewery", and ensures this term is defined for the show, referencing an article by Beverage Daily that quotes the Brewer's Association, found here:

Don't Stop Beerlieving Episode 11 - The St. Patrick's Day Special!

What DIDN’T we talk about this week?

Don’t Stop Beerlieving Hosts Chris and Michael welcome guests and fellow podcasters of the Stupid Fat Hobbits comedy podcast to join them in celebrating St. Patrick’s Day! And look, we get it, we’re a week early, but that means we’re right on time!

Michael and Chris discuss what people should be drinking for St. Patrick’s Day in terms of beer and wonder what you all are going to drink for the festivities. Guests Johnny and Pat opt for the seltzer (pronounced SELT-ZER) choice, bringing onto the show the first-ever White Claw and Bud Light seltzers, and most likely last ever. Michael and Chris acknowledge to each their own while the two sides discuss how craft breweries are becoming more accessible to the everyday drinker, with their own seltzers and drier options that resemble wines. Johnny and Pat give their own background in the craft beer scene, which is an appreciation for the small business model. Pat tells of the background of St. Patrick's Day colors, whether blue or green should be worn for the day. The guys give their St. Patrick's Day plans while discussing whether the holiday helps or hinders the craft beer scene. Michael talks about the Irish Red Ale style, his choice of beer to drink for the holiday. While drinking this style homebrew by Dan Hernandez, Michael discusses how homebrewers and the craft brew industry is trying and excited to teach the average drinking how their beer is made so that the consumer becomes more educated in their purchases and their preferences. On the flip side, we talk about consumer behavior/etiquette in the taproom when interacting with undesirable beer and your beertender. Johnny gives us the origin of St. Patrick’s Day, a day of festivity that Americans have very much made their own. Patrick goes onto a tangent about Milk Toast for some reason but reins it back in as we learn about Pilsners, which may be his gateway beer into the craft beer scene. The guys talk about potential starter beers for those wanting to get into craft beer, even with larger distributed but still independent brewers. Michael and Chris ask the Stupid Fat Hobbits crew what their thoughts about beer hype are and if standing in line for exclusive releases makes sense to them.

We’re coming to the end of Season 1! Next week will bring this season to a close, so please send us your suggestions, comments, or any feedback. Maybe things you want to see in Season 2!

Don't Stop Beerlieving Episode 10 - Is Beer Hype Your Type?

Michael catches the listeners up with his newest Baltimore City find: De Kleine Duivel. A specialty beer hall focused on Belgian styles, this is a must for those who want to try hard-to-find monastery styles. Check out the Instagram page to see what he drank and his thoughts on each, @dontstopbeerlieving

Chris wants to hear your beer pairing menu! Enhancement of food and beer through pairing is a fun and awesome way to further appreciate the craft. Let us know what you came up with over the past week, if you had any combinations that you tried that worked amazingly, or if the experiment was hard to find value in.

Michael and Chris discuss the hype behind Pliny the Younger, a Triple IPA released by Russian River Brewing Company in California that has been flooding the Craft Beer groups for trades and pomp. A very complex beer in terms of the grain bill and also the hops chosen, the guys have heard this beer called the Nectar of the gods. What do you think about beer hype, exclusive limited releases that result in lines out the door, hour-long waits, and even the craft beer trading scene? Have you been able to find this beer? Let us know your thoughts on it if you have!

Michael and Chris discuss a recent study given by House Method, discussing the most popular breweries, craft or not, in the United States. The study can be found here:

https://housemethod.com/lifestyle/most-popular-breweries/

Let us know your thoughts on the study! Do you agree with its methodology? Do you agree with its results, both for each individual state and for the nation?

Opinions matter in this industry! But remember that everyone has their own, and experiences differ among different people. Have conversations, give your perspective, but also listen to your community when discussing preference.

Finally, Michael gives you a challenge related to the topic of the week: Go to a beer release and see if the culture of beer hype exists! Talk to the person next to you to see what their experience of the craft beer scene is where you live. If you're in the Baltimore area, Manor Hill is releasing 2 beers for First Friday, both on the hoppy side of things.
