EP 10: What is Happiness Anxiety & How to Combat it

19m · What Nik Knows · 27 Nov 09:08

When things are good do you believe something bad is going to follow?

If you’re traveling today I have the perfect 20 minute episode to keep ya occupied. Today on the LOTP podcast we get into mental health. Specifically regarding anxiety. I share a short story that recently happened to me that almost left me in a panic attack in the cheese section of Trader Joe’s (no joke). But, instead of completely crumbing. I combatted my anxiety and kept on shopping.

I’ll keep it a short caption and just tell you this…I was having the most wonderful day and whammy an incident occurred which instantly knocked the wind out of me and all my old tendencies and behaviors started to crawl (it felt more like a whoosh tbh) to the surface.

I use to believe that when good things happened a bad thing would follow. But the truth is, these two things are running side by side. Life is always happening around us.

Did you know that it’s actually not unusual to feel anxious following good news or when life is good. Psychologists like myself call this happiness anxiety. A lot of the time our emotions get mixed together.

Think of the movie Inside Out…you know at the end when the girl is feeling both happy and sad and the glass ball has mixed colors of blue and yellow?  These emotions can get tied together based on the situation presented to us.

This mix bag of emotions can make it challenging for us later on… our brain may not be able to shout “HAPPY ONLY” to us while experiencing something different because we now may associate happy things with sadness, fear, or another emotion.

Additionally, you may have experienced events in the past like sharing wonderful news only to have it clouded by a family tragedy the same day or getting a job promotion only for your house to flood the following morning. Life is always happening around us but sometimes we believe that when this good thing happens this bad thing will follow…and this is where I sat for awhile until I learned how to manage my anxiety and understand my emotions.

Tune into day to hear the whole story. My hope is that you grab some tips on how to self-sooth, regain clarity, and take control of your anxiety.

Season 2 Finale: The Secret To Life Is Doing Less & Being More

SEASON 2 FINAL EPISODE!

1 year ago (tomorrow) I launched season 2 of What Nik Knows. It was formally known as Leader of the Pax and I solely focused on female entrepreneurship.

45 episodes later (40 live and 5 saved for season 3 launch!) the 2nd season of my podcast expanded more than I could ever have imagined. Beyond downloads, came new clients, new partnerships, and oh SO MUCH LEARNING!

When I started BMB I made a real effort in providing resources for pregnant, postpartum, and newish moms because we were in smack dap in the middle of quarantine. So the podcast become an educational and inspirational space for mothers, entrepreneurs, and personal development junkies. We focused on mental, physical, and emotional health, relationships, parenting, and identity and purpose. We cried and laughed and damn did we grow.

Today on the What Nik Know’s Podcast I celebrate the 40th and final episode of the 2nd season. The theme of today’s show is all about doing less and being more and that’s the mentality I’ll be taking with me as I hibernate before season 3 launch.

Beyond that I talk about the different guests we’ve had and topics we’ve covered throughout the year and dang am I grateful to have had these incredible people on the show!

I want to thank you for helping me grow this podcast. Because of you we are just about to hit 5,000 downloads which is a huge feat in itself. I produced many of these episodes with out childcare and nearly all of them without any production management help.

Until next season, ciao!

Is It OK To Want To Lose Weight or Should We Practice Loving Ourselves Instead? Breaking Down Body Image & Diet Culture with Molly Kate Wellness.

Raise your hand if you struggle or have struggled with your body image?

Yeah, that’s what I thought. A whole lot of us struggle with this.

Women are critiqued on their bodies right from the get-go. Too thin, too big, too soft, too muscular, too sexualized, too puritan… there is no win.

Today on the What Nik Know’s podcast I have the amazing @mollykatewellness who is a Body Image mentor.

Molly is a Body Image Coach and Mentor who believes that you can learn the skills of radical body acceptance in any body size. She loves watching people discover their inherent worthiness and step into the confident life they are meant for! Molly started coaching as a Certified Health Coach finding her niche in Intuitive Eating. Very quickly she discovered that food wasn't the root of the problem. She found that underneath that layer of food obsession, was an unhealthy relationship to our bodies. Molly's approach combines improving your body image through your head, your heart, and your body. She believes that everyone has all the tools they need within themselves and that each person has their own unique gifts and intuition to uncover! Molly believes that the more people there are being unapologetically themselves, the stronger we are as a whole!

I relate to this so much- food isn’t the problem, it’s the way I see myself.

I’ve shared on previous shows that body image and my relationship with food has been an ever changing and evolving relationship and I loved learning from Molly today.

Here are some of the amazing things you’ll hear on today’s show:

  1. The difference between mindful eating and intuitive eating
  2. How orthorexia shows up as healthy eating habits
  3. American women and body image
  4. How social media impacts our body image and what to do about it
  5. Breaking the belief system that our bodies are the only thing valuable about us
  6. How to teach children about a healthy body image right from the start
  7. How to set internal and external boundaries
  8. If its OK to lose weight or just love yourself as you are
  9. Diet culture BS

Personal Development is Not a Tony Robbins Seminar...It's Within You.

Personal development is not a Tony Robbins seminar… as much as you’d like to think so.

Today on the What Nik Know’s pod I go unscripted + unfiltered about my thoughts on personal development exertion.

We spend thousands of dollars and years doing THE WORK when really we need to do less WORK and more listening in.

Seminars, coaching, podcasts, books, all these things are tools to empower the journey but they aren’t the answer.

Personal development is not a seminar- it’s within you.
