"But it was done in the sense of making sure the best information was provided to the family. And we got a chance to sense what their expectations were of us. So that was probably my initial kind of introduction to share decision making." - Dr. Bootstaylor

"You are going to be in alignment with your provider and that's midwife and obstetrician, by the way, and then with that in mind as you go through the pregnancy, and things change, from having to go undergo bedrest to maybe having a positive cervical culture 36 weeks and it be treated with antibiotics. What's the relevancy of that? I'll spend some time in the future podcasts going over the significance of Group B streptococcus screens in pregnancy and labor in the clinical significance of that. But also, as you go through this pregnancy, with the ability to be in alignment, allows the guy to discovery to take place and for it to be a healthy process because of all the unknowns and all the things you had not planned for. You can now respond to it confidently and not feel that you're putting your baby at risk, putting yourself at risk." - Dr. Bootstaylor

"If the answer to that is equivocal, or no, then that shows that there's less alignment than you think. In my digital book, I go on to show her a picture graph of what an obstetrician put in their office about telling the expectant mother that if you hired a doula, they will discharge you from the practice that doesn't speak to a patient centered approach. And that speaks to some work that needs to be done between the mother and the provider." - Dr. Bootstaylor

"Providing the scope of care that we thought was essential for Shared Decision Making paradigm. I think the element that I was able to bring to that relationship was an understanding of the need to have a lot of latitude in the management and not to be so rigid with, I guess, protocols and procedures, understanding the science, in obstetrics about how things can potentially unfold." - Dr. Bootstaylor
