51. Eco-conscious Art, Design & Gaming with Magdalena

On this episode, Paige chats with her friend Magdalena (Magda) from Magdalena Creative. Magda is a full time designer with a passion for creating modern, fun and eclectic illustrative wall art, cards, homewares and much more! Her work is inspired by nature, animals and loves to paint quirky, colorful pieces that are full of character and life.
Paige and Magda chat about her move from Poland to Scotland to study Graphic Design for Digital media, working full time as a designer/illustrator and starting to make "bits and bobs" in her spare time. Her spare time creations led to opening her Etsy shop, participating in makers markets where she showcases a variety of wall art prints, cards, and homewares.
Paige learns about the gaming world as Magda shares her experience learning English and meeting her partner of 12 years through gaming. The end of this episodes focuses on Magda's use of responsible packaging - recyclable, biodegradable, reusable, and NO plastics. Her prints come in the simplest, most basic packaging. She uses as few elements as possible to package products, creating an exciting experience, yet avoiding unnecessary waste. All of this without compromising on the quality and longevity of the print.

On this episode Paige sits down and chats with the multitalented Rosilyn Holladay! From floral paintings, live wedding paintings, motherhood, and dental hygiene, Rosilyn has done it all!
Paige and Rosilyn discuss the difficulty of being an artist who is past the beginner stage but not quite a professional. They encourage others to reach out and not to undervalue their worth regardless of level. Rosilyn started pursuing an art career in college but then abandoned that dream to become a dental hygienist. Soon after, she returned to art and opened an art gallery. Rosilyn now does live wedding painting and sells artwork. Rosilyn points out the importance of continuing to learn even if one considers themselves accomplished stating, "...always have bigger dreams to reach out to."

On today’s episode Paige chats with her husband Sam about business, the crypto world, and what NFTs mean for artists and creators. Sam, who works in business and strategies, originally went to school to study accounting and entrepreneurship in hopes of opening his own business, saying “accounting is the language of business.” As he migrated through the different divisions of the business world he learned about crypto currency and NFTs.
The beauty of NFTs is that it creates value for communities as well as value for the creator, states Sam. He breaks down the large, intimidating world of crypto currency and what potential it has for creators. Sam also points out that the key to navigating this space is having a community, without it the hype surrounding crypto will become nothing.

Kristel is a senior at Howard University studying art and psychology in the hopes of becoming a professional artist and researcher. She points out the close relationship that psychology and art have and how she tries to include both disciplines in everything that she does.
Kristel is currently in another internship where she gets to be an art teacher for elementary students and talks about her presence as a black educator and artist. Paige and Kristel discuss navigating the art space as a young art student and going to school during the pandemic.
