Getting (literally) knocked out of a rut

15m · Published 15 Mar 03:02

It’s easy to get jaded after doing something for decades, months or even days. Then something unexpected happens. Sometimes a routine photo assignment turns out to be much more memorable – and maybe a little painful!

Where do all the photos Gogh?

16m · Published 11 Jan 03:14

Collectively, humans are taking an estimated 1.4 trillion photos a year. In a single day, we shoot more photos than were taken during the first 100 years of photography. What are we losing when we’re constantly shooting, and where do the images eventually end up?

Topics discussed:

  • Astroworld 2021: Photographer Daniel Cavazos reports on the fatal events of that day
  • How Many Photos Will be Taken in 2020?
  • Video Breaks Down the Sheer Number of Photos Uploaded Every Minute (This is an older article, but still very interesting.)

Have I been ‘cosplaying’ a photographer?

17m · Published 14 Sep 09:00

If you don’t feel inspired by your subject matter, maybe you’ve outgrown it. Perhaps you need to move the goalposts farther out to challenge yourself. Or maybe, it’s time to pass the torch.

I recently returned from DragonCon in Atlanta, where I questioned my own motivations for taking photos. Although I was carrying a lot of camera gear, I discovered I wasn't inspired to use it.

Before you go pro, enjoy being an amateur

20m · Published 20 Jul 08:00

If you’re just starting out as a photographer, undoubtedly there is pressure to “git gud” and start making money. Don’t fall into that trap. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being an amateur photographer. Think about the freedom you have. Freedom to shoot when, where, how and what you want. Freedom to constantly experiment. Freedom to create your art.

Some thoughts on film photography

19m · Published 06 Jul 08:00

Like vinyl records, typewriters, fountain pens and mechanical watches, film photography seems to be back in vogue. For some of us, it never really left.

This show will be a little different because I’m not pitching any questionable advice today. I’m just reminiscing about film photography, which I’m seeing more and more interest in these days, despite efforts of the industry to get rid of it altogether.
