This is part two of our three part series of the formation of the modern day mafia as Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky formed it.Today, we read again as part of our three part series on Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lanksy from, "The Mafia: Encyclopedia Second Edition" by Carl Sifakis. Lansky is considered by most as the financial figure head for the modern day mafia. He work hand in hand with Lucky Luciano from boys to men. They established themselves as the patriarchs of the mafia dynasty. Meyer never yearned for the spotlight like Luciano, he just wanted to be financially astute to keep the mob money rolling in. Lanksy's history is inundated with controversy, diplomatic failures, and bully fueled triumphs but one thing that he wasn't was dumb. He made enough money to last him lifetimes 2x over. "The little man" as he was known to some cemented his legacy in the mob and the lore for years to come.

Today, we read from, "The Mafia: Encyclopedia Second Edition" by Carl Sifakis. "Lucky" Luciano was one of the most infamous and prolific figures in modern American mob history. Coming to the United Stated when he was 9 years he was already running a "racket"of sorts a year later. Yeah...at 10 years old already hustling kids out of their money. At this time he met Meyer Lansky - reading about next week - and formed a bond that proved business was going to rise! I love reading about the mafia but as you will hear have a hard time glorifying their actions.

Today, we read from, "the Founding Fathers Reconsidered", by R.B. Bernstein. The United States constitution is a living document that continues to be molded by modern day framers. The epilogue that I read from summates the reasoning why we have amendments, why the Bill of Rights has been a ruling body of work for our country. It has been quite the election year, and as wild as it seems I am optimistic. I love this country so much. I have optimism in us, I think that emotionally we have resolve and can figure out how to actually get back to "work" on US and stop instituting divisive rhetoric that is tearing down the civil structure that we have worked so hard to get a few steps ahead.  This podcast hit very close due to the temperature of the nation presently. I wish you all well and hope that we can continue to progress! Be well and enjoy.

Today we read from the collection of H.P. Lovecraft, who is considered by many as a forefather of the macabre genre of writing. "The Outsider" is the story of a being that has been long destitute to a very dark place in a castle for an unknown period of time. Kind hearted in its nature the being makes a trek to the surface to finally experience the actual light and sun that has been missing from all this time passed. Upon arrival things are just as glorious as it thought they would be. The being also makes the acquaintance of folks that are leisurely enjoying their evening. That is when the story really turns up. This is the first time I have read from Mr. Lovecraft and won't be the last, I enjoyed this thoroughly. We close out this Halloween month with a bang with, "The Outsider", enjoy.

Today we read a short story, "Laura",  from Saki, which is the pen name for H.H. Munro. This is by far my favorite story that I have read in a while. Short sweet, creepy, hilarious. It has all the elements for the show. I will try to explain but the brevity of it will still leave a lot to be learned. This is a story of a sister about to die who invariably projects how her afterlife will turn out. That is all I can say without giving the whole things away. I love the style of writing here as I legit felt the twist at the end. Love, love, love this story, and I hope you do too!

Today we read a short story from Bram Stoker, "The Squaw".  Bram Stoker is known of course for, "Dracula", but what people often overlook are the countless short stories of horror that he authored. "The Squaw" is a peculiar story in that the couple featured decided it would be a good idea to include a third wheel on their honeymoon. As if it wasn't enough effort to manage emotions for your spouse to try and "be there" for a third person who happens to also be a stranger took me a while to digest - still am.  Having said that they take their trip to Nurnberg in hopes of the romantic getaway. What better place to visit than the acclaimed "Torture Chamber" -  the name alone exudes love...clearly. They come across a cat with her new kitten and the stranger incidentally kills it with a rock dropped from 60 feet up. With brains everywhere, mama cat tries to avenge it's kittens untimely demise. Unsuccessful at first, we find that the cat manages in the end to...well let's just listen and you find out the gory details!

Today we read a chapter out of, "Haunted Salt Lake City" by Cassie Ashton. The chapter covers ghostly experiences and history behind the city and county building in downtown Salt Lake City - 451 S State St. We follow Bill as he depicts vivid stories to a ghost hunting crew of happenings in the building. From children playing in the bathroom to the mayor that was there when it was first built, R.N. Baskin entering his old offices, wrapping up with sightings of Joe Hill with accompanied pictures to back it up. This was fun playing with voices and reading the history, I did not realize this was made in spite of the LDS temple as to show that Utah had in fact a separation of church and state AND built/funded by the freemasons. I really had a great time learning, reading, and playing with this narration. Cassie Ashton is a wonderful writer and made this enjoyable!

Today we read a chapter out of, "The Yankee Years" by Joe Torre & Tom Verducci. Chapter 10, which details the experience of the 1004 ALCS matchup between the Joe Torre Led New York Yankees and the Terry Francona Led Boston Red Sox. Famous for the 3-0 lead that Yankees relinquished which led to the Red Sox winning their first World Series in 86 years. The inner workings of the clubhouse were not just interesting but they were telling of how the demise happened. As an avid Yankees fan myself, it was particularly difficult for me to read as I relived this sports nightmare. Nevertheless I was intrigued at how Joe Torre was taking this all in. This is a long one folks so buckle in and enjoy the ride!

Today we read a story from James Baldwin. As a provocative thinker, essayist, and cultural icon, Mr. Baldwin did not mince words during the civil rights movement of the Sixties in the USA. The Library of America thankfully compiled some of his most important pieces of writing to bring today's story for us, "The Discovery of What It Means to be an American".  James Baldwin lived in France for much of his adult life where he found his voice and writing style to give to the world. One of my biggest takeaways was the, "social paranoia" that we experience here in America when it comes to our status. Keeping up with the Jones' some may say. The interaction described between the waiter and the businessman and the respect that they both have for each other really resonated. I know more episodes are to come from this collections of essays. I was proud to read from this and hope you feel the same.

Today we read about 45. Donald Trump himself through the lens of his niece Mary Trump, P.H.D. - can't forget that. Her book, "Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World's Most Dangerous Man" is a tell all that dives into the mental makeup of President Donald Trump from an actual family members perspective. The book doesn't dive so much into politics as much as it highlights the inner family workings, struggles, and general mindset of the Trump family based on Fred Trump's motivations - Donald's father. I read the prologue in this episode as it best summates where the rest of the book really expounds where we are at and who we are dealing with. Register to vote.
