What does it mean to be a playwright in Thailand? Why does it feel like there’s such a dearth of original plays in this country? What can we do to promote more original playwriting in Thailand? What can we learn from our neighbors and how can we work with them to develop playwriting in Thailand and the region? We discuss these questions and more with playwright-director-performer Parnrut Kritchanchai of New Theatre Society, a Thai company known for their adaptation works, and Jaa Phantachat and Tananop Kanjanawutisit, co-founders of Collective Thai Scripts, a group that collects, compiles and translates original play scripts by Thai artists for publication.

In this episode, we interview Mark Teh, who’s a Malaysian director, curator, and researcher from Five Arts Centre. Mark was recently in Chiang Mai and Bangkok for the Breathing of Maps, a program he co-curated with Kumiko Idaka from Japan. The program began in January and featured an exhibition at Maiiam Contemporary Art Museum in Chiang Mai, along with lectures and performances by academics and artists from Southeast Asia and Japan. It then concluded at the Jim Thompson House in Bangkok earlier this month. We talk to Mark about the Breathing of Maps, doing political theatre as a student, and what it’s like to work with history and memory as an artist in Southeast Asia.

During BIPAM, Bangkok Offstage had a chance to sit down for a quick talk with the three young Cambodian dance artists of New Cambodian Artists, or NCA. Sreynoch Khun, Soeng Va Kong, and Nilai Ah started off very young with Cambodian classical and folk dance training before they found Western contemporary dance. And their style today is a mix of these dance forms. In this episode, they give us their takes on beauty, femininity, and dance in Cambodia.
