Summer Learning Programming for the week of June 26-30

10m · Published 21 Jun 16:49

Hello everyone, and welcome to our special summer edition of the Yadkin County Public Library podcast!

These episodes help you prepare for the upcoming week’s summer programming options, explaining what programs are available, the activity or craft, and the appropriate age range.

This summer, the national CSLP or Collaborative Summer Learning Program theme is “All Together Now,” so the programs aim to match the theme! “All Together Now” encompasses Kindness, Friendship, and Unity. We are also focusing on helping others and our community members that help us.

Let’s see what our Yadkin County Public Library branch in Yadkinville has to offer for next week of June 26th to June 30th!

On Monday, June 26

  • At 10am we have our school age (recommended ages 5-18, or grades K-12).  Yadkin County EMS program. This specific program is in collaboration with our local EMS services and will focus on a variety of information covering safety topics and what EMTs do for our communities. Patrons will also get the opportunity to tour an emergency vehicle and learn about the equipment in them.

On Tuesday, June 27

  • At 10am we have another school age program, but this time recommended for ages 7 and up, given we have writing and cutting tools being used for different events. This weeks’ program is called Mixed Media Best Friend Portraits.  For this program we will be thinking of those who are closest to us, our best friends! During this hour,  we will tap into your creative side to create portraits of our best friends.  Whether it’s recreating their face or the essence of your friendship, we will be making these unique portraits with the help of a variety of materials.  **If you decide to use watercolors or glitter, you may need to dress for a possible mess**.

On Tuesday, June 27

  • At 3pm we have Kindness Rocks! Rock Garden during the Teen / Young Adult Crafternoon, a program for ages 13 to 18. They will be painting rocks and terra cotta pots with acrylics creating their own kindness gardens.  This program will allow each participant to be as creative as they want. And afterwards they will have their own garden that spreads kindness and positivity.  **Be sure to wear clothing that can get messy. **

On Wednesday, June 28

  • At 10am, each Wednesday, we have our paid performers visit. This week’s performer is Captain Jim. He will be doing his Captain Jim is Magic show. Captain Jim isa professional magician who has performed at various venues from state fairs, festivals and libraries. He has a dynamic and fun presence about him, whose act caters to all ages. Prepare yourself for a morning of mind boggling tricks and magical motivation. This program is for all ages. Captian Jim’s website https://www.captainjimismagic.com/

On Thursday,  June 29

  • At 10am, we will have Preschool Storytime with Book Friends as our topic. We will be looking at “friends in fiction”. The craft will involve easy painting, gluing, and  glittering of a Winnie the Pooh “hunny” pot.  The books that will be covered involve groups of friends such as Sesame Street, Winne the Pooh, Clifford, Elephants and Piggie , Mickey Mouse etc. This program is recommended for ages 2-5, but if older or younger siblings need to attend alongside their siblings, that’s fine. The recommended ages get priority for any supplies.
  • Later in the day, from 3-5pm, we will have STEAM Club.  This program will use STEM toys and manipulatives at individual stations. The STEM toys are rated for ages 3-18+, just be sure to read the recommended age at each station. Adults stay in the room and help supervise their children, as staff will be directing the Makerspace area. This week’s Makerspace topic, fitting the summer theme “of helping the community, helping the world” is entitled Recycle:Crayons. Children ages 5 and up will get the chance to learn about recycling through the process of making new crayons out of old ones. Children will rotate through the Makerspace station, 4 at a time.
