But more importantly, it means we get to live life on our terms! In this episode we will break down three different specific ways we have invested during our personal finance journey to reach FIRE! These are simple, but effective, ways to fund the life that you want to live and see retirement in a completely different way!

Welcome To Average Money #001

46m · Published 11 Sep 00:29

Welcome to Average Money! The podcast is brought to you by two friends: Brad Finn, a physics teacher in New York and JJ Buckner a full-time YouTuber who recently left his day job to pursue his passion for spreading financial education. They are just two average family guys with above average dreams, looking to share their story as they work to become financially free.

The goals for the podcast are to talk about money with you every single week, and talk about the strategies they’ve used to achieve their goals financially. This podcast will provide insight from different guests across all different walks of life, who have accomplished amazing things through hard work, education, and discipline, and Brad and JJ are excited to share their stories with you.

In the first episode of Average Money,  Brad and JJ answer a lot of common questions:  why is financial literacy so important? What are the goals and sacrifices that it takes to become financially independent? How did they get to where they are today? Why did they start thinking about money differently than their peers?

JJ shares his backstory and talks about growing up as a natural saver, putting aside any money  he earned for specific purposes. However, his main financial journey started after he graduated college with an engineering degree and began working for an engineering firm and hated it, he could not see himself working there until retirement age. He didn't want to live out his life the same way he saw his superiors living theirs and wanted to be more efficient with his money. JJ shares about how he got into YouTube, and needing an outlet to share his financial knowledge, opinions and thoughts, which ultimately brought him here.

Brad talks about how he was more of a spender, who always had money coming in but had no idea about lifestyle creep, and had no idea what his net worth was until he looked into it and was shocked to see that it was negative and he had no idea. He talks about how his mindset changed and came into perspective once he became a dad, and had a desire to leave a legacy for his kids. Brad talks about his journey paying off debt, and how he persevered through the rough times of paying off debt and how treating his net worth as a scoreboard for keeping him motivated.

The episode dives into the power of tracking and writing down your expenses and tracking it against a budget. They talk about the power of how giving up things now can pay off huge later in life, through the power of compounding. JJ talks about how giving up short term gratification allowed him to quit his day job before he turned 30 and post on YouTube full-time, and be afforded the time to spend more time with his kids. Brad compares it to being able to pour his coffee slow, make his coffee with a french press, instead of the usual work days which are much more hectic and he doesn’t have time for a 10 minute cup of coffee.  Description Written By Average Money Community Member Aaron Azevedo!
