Blood Sweat & Careers

by Austin Mark, Mallory Kaufman, Katherine

Multi-passionate entrepreneurs & millennials Mallory Kaufman(she/her), Austin Mark(he/him) & Katherine Peach(she/her) are joined by experts, innovators & advocates who carved their own path & embraced finding meaning at work, & (dare we say?) purpose in their lives. We break down what it means to assemble a dream career, make a living doing more than one thing, & thrive in today’s trash fire of an economy. We believe podcasts can be more than one thing too, so expect a splash of pop culture, business know-how & a healthy dose of skepticism. Follow along @bloodsweatcareers!

World Traveler w/ Engineer-Environmentalist-Conservationist Brooke Segerberg

1h 6m · Published 20 Apr 07:00
This week's guest has made a living building bridges both literally in Rwanda and figuratively as she’s cobbled together a dynamic career that’s taken her to some of the most beautiful and wild places on the planet. A friend of the pod Brooke Segerberg is Senior Biodiversity Research Officer with WWF that is taking her to Cambodia. We caught her days before her move! Brooke’s also acted as a biodiversity ranger and trapper in New Zealand. Led as a short-term consultant managing a footbridge program in eSwatini in Swaziland. And collected miller moths with a Dustbuster as a Wildlife Technician in Glacier National Park carrying out grizzly bear and moth research. Impressed yet? Co-hosts Katherine, Mallory and Austin follow the thread of her career that taught her how to create connections, find rare opportunities and know when to switch up the routine. We also talk about just because a career sounds great on paper, doesn’t mean you won’t experience highs and lows along the way. Survival Jobs

1h 2m · Published 06 Apr 07:00

Survival Jobs: Is it a a phrase from multi-hyphenate jargon, career pivot or even a problematic term? Culturally, young people have shifted from gaining work experience (and paying for cars, college or just supporting the family) to gaining the "right" kind of work experience. Even as the pandemic displaced so many workers, there are stigmas around what’s a “worthy” job and the "right" way a career should progress. According to backstage.com a “survival job is a job someone takes to pay the bills while pursuing a career they love.” Co-hosts Mallory, Austin and Katherine circle up to discuss a listener suggested topic (thanks Kristen!). We parse this definition and more by exploring the complexities, hang ups and privilege tied to the concept.

Chef's Special w/ Chef–Veteran–EMT Rory Leahy

58m · Published 16 Mar 07:00
This week we find the special ingredient that makes Rory Leahy such a great guest! Rory started his career in the army leading him to a eye-rolling stint as a quality control lab technician (read: taste tester). He loved his role as an EMT while waiting for a position to open up to be a firefighter. An eye injury meant that dream would never come true, so he ditched the low-paying gig (Yes, most people working in healthcare make minimum wage). Today, he's found success as a chef running his own kitchen at Swill Inn in Chicago. Co-hosts Austin, Mallory and Katherine talk with Rory about finding Buddhism, finding your place in a role, and how what we're "meant" to do is sometimes the skill we take for granted.  Eat, Drink, and meet Rory at Swill Inn in Chicago: www.SwillInn.com Check out Rory's food creations and ADORABLE daughter Lilly: @Gordondadsay Check out the book: Buddhism For Dudes: A Jarhead's Guide to Mindfulness
