Changing Our Financial Narratives, Part 2 | EP56

47m · Published 12 Oct 01:30

It’s all about candour and calling out systemic inequity on this episode of Centsability with Amie Baker. She’s welcoming back Dawn Thomas, Senior Financial Adviser at The Wealth Designer, for a high-energy chat about what’s not working for women. And how we can get brave, speak up and take steps to build on positive change of the kind represented by Australia’s newly adopted Workplace Gender Equality Amendment (https://www.legislation.gov.au/Details/C2023A00018/Html/). The conversation touches on everything from important liabilities women need to keep in mind at every stage of their careers – from salary negotiation to parity in child care burden to asking for that overdue pay raise. You’ll also hear a profound call to action related to helping younger women recognize their power (as well as the power of superannuation over time as a tool for building wealth). Get ready to challenge social conditioning and break traditional gender roles. The time has come and these two financial planning experts are empowering us with case studies, stats and strategies for having those difficult – but necessary – conversations! Says Dawn: “We’re talking about a huge systemic shift that needs to happen – and valuing women as a whole when we are being undervalued.”

Changing Our Financial Narratives | EP55

45m · Published 15 Jun 06:44

Many of us think immediately of the economic nuts and bolts when it comes to financial planning, but this episode of Centsability is focused on the big picture, including the emotional baggage many of us carry when it comes to money. Host Amie Baker invites her good friend, Dawn Thomas, to share thoughts about her journey as a Senior Financial Adviser at The Wealth Designers. Their conversation takes on thorny issues such as shame, fear and scarcity thinking – negative mindsets that can keep us stuck in an unhealthy (often counterproductive) relationship with money. “I’m not here just to put a spreadsheet in your face,” says Dawn, who is also the host of Your Money Story(https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/your-money-story/id1555980141). “If you want to work with me as an adviser, it’s really got to be a pretty open, brutal, honest relationship.” It’s all about getting real! You’ll come away from this discussion with a clearer understanding of the holistic role financial advisers play – not just when we’ve amassed wealth but in the early stages of planning that set the stage for long-term freedom. Herself a graduate of Amie’s Money Mindset course, Dawn explains her deepened understanding around how the stories we tell ourselves can block us from visioning the lives we want and deserve. Enjoy Part I of what will be a multi-part exploration of women, financial literacy and how to embrace mindsets that foster abundance and banish fear!

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Origin Story: How Dawn transitioned from a background in the arts to a focus on financial empowerment – in particular helping women harness wealth.
  • Inviting Abundance: How Amie’s Money Mindset coaching helped Dawn unlock and change her narratives around finances.
  • Gender Bias: Addressing cultural barriers that create feelings of daily financial stress in 53% of women, who continue to earn on average 22% less than men.
  • Turning Points: What it looks like (transformation!) to fully take accountability and bring awareness to patterns of thought and cultural-economic defaults that do not serve.
  • Letting Go of Shame: Why Dawn resonates deeply with clients unnecessarily beating up on themselves while managing through financial transitions.

We’ve all experienced it: Standing in front of our wardrobe feeling drab, drained and uninspired. Don’t blame it on the clothes! As we’re learning on this episode of Centsability, a personal style refresh may be all you need. My guest, Gessica Marmotta, isn’t talking about a huge and costly shopping spree or the latest designer brand. Her coaching framework is all about uncovering and connecting with a personal style that is truly our own. Much as a financial advisor knows how to cultivate successful money mindsets, Gessica’s styling services cultivate our most successful selves – radiant, confident and unique. Under her watchful eye, my wardrobe underwent a total transformation; an empowering adventure that resulted not only in the reimagination of pieces I already had but the addition of some simple, affordable items that tied everything together in new and exciting ways. It’s important self-care that pays amazing dividends! You’ll learn about the importance of developing a signature style as well as exploring colors and accessories you’ve long thought you shouldn’t wear. We’re also sharing five great ideas to liven up your wardrobe and a call to action for anyone clinging to negative programming or limiting beliefs. Who we are isn’t what we wear, but what we wear can certainly influence how we feel and show up in the world. So join us for a deep dive into the power of creating a “visual voice,” how individual style differs from trendy fashion and why getting help from a coach is an incredibly savvy investment, both professionally and personally!

IWD Special: Are We There Yet? And What We Need To Do About It? | EP53

36m · Published 04 Apr 00:19

The 8th of March was International Women’s day – and the AFA NSW Inspire committee and I hosted a sold out luncheon to our financial services community to celebrate and evoke thought and challenge those attending on how we can all make positive change for a more equitable future for women as well as much needed funds for the Equanimity Project.

Last Friday (the 31st of March 2023) Workplace Gender Equality Amendment (Closing the Gender Pay Gap Bill) 2023 was passed, and although this may not seem significant for everyone – it is for many of my clients, women I work with at The Equanimity Project, my colleagues and myself. On the 6th of March, the Financy Index published that the average gender pay gap in Australia was 22.8%, which was slightly lower than 2021. In Australia we have a massive gender wealth gap and this has been caused by multiple reasons – one of which is the gender pay gap.

So, asking are we there yet? Is the question many women where asking in early March as we considered the UNs International Women’s Day theme: Cracking the Code: Innovation for a gender equal future. In this episode, I share some important things that we need to consider making change happen. The past few weeks I have been speaking at events on and around this topic. I also was involved in a white paper that was published by Netwealth on females being the new face of wealth – a very optimistic view on where we are heading, however, this very paper also shares some concerning statistics around women’s attitudes and beliefs when it comes to money management and investing.

We can read and appreciate all of these statistics and information and even celebrate that our government is calling for change too, BUT what are we all doing in our own lives to improve not only our communities, work cultures, household but our personal relationship with money too.

In episode 53, I share my views on how we can all play our part in creating a gender equal future, and it starts from understanding how we got here, having an awareness of our own subconscious bias’s and how we are all responsible for making change happen…. And often it starts with ourselves.

If you want to have a look at some of the data that came out of the Netwealth white paper – then please click here and register for a copy.

What $100 Can Do For Your Financial Future…. | EP52

32m · Published 20 Mar 04:19

In this episode I explore a simple strategy of investing just $100 each week and how this could turn into hundreds of thousands of dollars over time. I also share the importants of being clear with your short term and long term goals and why savings and also investing is something to be considered as part of your strategy.

In this episode I also mention a new bank I stumbled across from one of my CMTC students called UP bank. I love when I find new finance apps, accounts and investing tools that help me, my clients and students reach their financial goals and this one certainly does that. If you are after a high interest savings account that also allows you to round up purchases and does not charge overseas transaction fees (among many other great features) then check out: https://up.com.au/

During this podcast I used the compound interest calculator from the Money Smart website: https://moneysmart.gov.au/budgeting/compound-interest-calculator. This is a great tool to use to plan and forecast potential financial outcomes – as well as keep you motivated.

Whatever your goal is, where ever you are at, the first thing you must do is get started. And start here and now. Don’t wait… What are you waiting for anyway? To earn more? To have more? Why not create that for yourself with what you already have?

In this episode I also speak about the course I am launching – currently in the Beta stage which will be launched to the public in the new year. If you are interested in knowing more or what to join my waitlist, please click here.

With Special Guest, Trading Expert Louise Bedford and I Have A Candid Chat About Mindset Trading and Investing | EP51

46m · Published 20 Feb 05:36

Although I was getting Louise on to share her expertise about trading, we found ourselves further unpacking the importance of having a long-term view as well as setting short term goals with the catalyst being getting our mindset right when it comes to investing.

It's not surprising to hear that only 26% of American women get involved in investing in the stock market and that they tend to be less aggressive in their approach compared to men. But did you know that many studies have shown that women tend to outperform their male counterparts in investing? Despite this, only 9% of women believe they make better investors than men.

Recent stats also came out of a white paper whereby Netwealth interviewed Australian women of all ages to get an idea of their attitude to investing, their confidence around money management and financial literacy. Click this link (https://www.netwealth.com.au/web/insights/the-advisable-australian/women-investors/?utm_source=Adviser&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=2023-Advisable_Australian) to this white paper – the fact is when it comes to women, we often lack confidence – often derived by fear caused by subconscious programming.

But this does not mean we are not good at investing – on the contrary: Investments managed by women during 2022’s market draw down fared better than assets managed by male counterparts. The analysis examined returns from 80 investment portfolios across 73 asset managers.

Interestingly, the evidence also suggests that in times of stress, female fund managers take less risk than male fund managers, but they achieve the same performance.

Vanessa Dolan Shares Her Journey of Transforming Her Financial Future and Money Mindset With CMTC | EP50

54m · Published 06 Feb 02:08

Today I am bringing you a special guest - one of my students of the Centsability Money Transformation Course. Vanessa joined my course after I had done a presentation on 5 mistakes people make when it comes to their finances, and how money mindset is a key player to financial success.

Vanessa had travelled and worked around the world and recently came back to Australia feeling as if she was starting her life all over again at 52. Knowing her financial future was entirely in her hands and retirement no longer seemed so far away – Vanessa was in fear knowing she needed to do something about it.

In this candid interview Vanessa is open and honest sharing her experience of this course, how she has shifted her mindset, improved her relationship with money and now has a plan that has redefined how she perceived retirement to simply planning out her dream life. I loved chatting with her about her money transformations and I hope you do to.

Creating this online course has been a long journey and an undertaking I underestimated – its taken over 3 years to get it to this stage in the Beta phase and I am incredibly proud of what has come of it so far so it has been so amazing to hear how this is helping others now and hopefully well into the future. Shifting Our Mindset So We Remain On Track With Money Goals | EP49

34m · Published 30 Jan 02:04

I spoke about how to set yourself up for success in my last episode as we head into a new year, so it was only fitting for me to continue this conversation and go deeper into how to shift your money mindset into gear.

In this episode I uncover some of the key aspects of money mindset coaching – sharing how the subconscious works – the clues you can uncover to why you may be in avoidance or sabotaging the actual thing you deeply desire and what to do about it.

The first step is awareness. We need to understand how our “programming” has hindered us from out true and great potential. What is your self-talk like when it comes to money? Do you tell yourself your terrible at it? Do you avoid looking at your finances?

Do you know your money story? This could be the biggest insight to why you are currently in the situation you are in and having this awareness can be game changing.

Could your subconscious be holding you back from doing more, having more, investing more when it comes to money? IF any of this sounds familiar then join me today as we explore whats really going on when you start out with all the right intentions but quickly things seems to go pear shaped and your financial goals are kick to the curb…. You don’t really want that but your not exactly sure why and how this happens every time you intent on improving your finances.

Once you understand what’s really going on you will be able to identify limiting beliefs and actually do something about it. Ask yourself empowering questions and take action by stepping into the future self of who you want to be and achieving what you set out to achieve.

If this episode has inspired you in any way, then why not take a screen shot of you listening to it and tag me @centsable_amie
