She calls the construct she developed the ABCs of Rich Talk. A stands for adaptive, B stands for back-and-forth and C stands for child driven but could also stand for centric.

Rebecca is on the faculty of the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Harvard Medical School. She is a lecturer, speech pathologist and consultant who is passionate about language and communication. She arms adults with practical tools to help them have productive and meaningful conversations with children of all ages—whether it’s engaging a stubborn toddler or getting the most reticent teenager to open up.

Traits of Difference Makers, The Russ Berrie Award for Making a Difference

The Russ Berrie Making a Difference Award is a prestigious awards program that honors "unsung heroes" who demonstrate their passion and unstoppable commitment to serve the most vulnerable. Since the inception of the Russ Berrie Making a Difference Award in 1997, there have been over 400 honorees who've received more than $4 million in cash awards. Their work is improving people’s lives and making communities stronger. This year, eleven outstanding changemakers were honored at the 27th Anniversary Award Ceremony. They received awards totaling $160,000.

Ivan's Top Ten Ideas for Organizing Your Conversations

1. Have a reason, purpose or objective(s) for your conversations.

2. Set an agenda and check for acceptance of it. Make sure it's mutual.

3. Use active listening to confirm understanding.

4. Establish and maintain rapport.

5. Unless this is a completely new relationship, reference or connect to past conversations and shared understandings.

6. Learn and explore.

  a) Elicit thoughts, feelings, needs and wants.

  b) Gather information about people, places, things, circumstances and problems.

  c) Discuss goals, dreams and aspirations.

7. Exercise self-control.

8. Discuss ways to address needs, sticking points or objections.

9. Determine what decisions need to be made.

10. Agree on next steps with key agreement words.
