Bookends With Friends

Welcome to the bookends bookshop! We record once-ish a month over here in this corner, our shelves are stocked with mostly fantasy fiction, and we have a James Dashner book-club that meets everyday. On this week's episode we day dream about quitting our jobs to start a bookshop. We are guided through that journey by Hwang Bo-Reum with experiences and platitudes to keep us motivated and excited to make our dreams come true. It's book week!! And we have brought you the curious case of a mystery author and the hollywood blockbuster they are hoping for. Argylle is a spy thriller linked with a newly released major motion picture, loaded with A list stars. We are starting with the source material written by the elusive Elly Conway, who may or may not be an AI chat bot, but who has definitely helped create a shared universe for Agent Aubrey Argylle to save again and again. We discuss topics like the super interesting true history that lays the foundation for Argylle's first mission, the book's connection with its movie counterpart, and how the author of this book may have called their own shot in real real life. We did an Oopsie! But it's an oopsie we can all learn from! We have unfortunately decided to DNF our December book, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. We take the time in this episode to discuss DNF'ing and the stigma surrounding it. We're so sorry to all of you who were either looking forward to this book or had already purchased it in some way. We hope you all do still enjoy it if you decide to read on anyways! And let us know what you think! It was a bit too long of a pick (Brett's fault) for the busiest month of the year, and we have less time than expected this month, so a pivot was needed. We have instead decided to read the highly recommended Piranesi by Susanna Clark. We promise no DNF this time. Let us know what you think of the switch and what your thoughts are on DNF'ing.

Happy Holidays!! We are minus 1 on today's episode because Dan is busy being a brand new dad!! And it's a book week! But don't worry, we have a new segment for all of Dan's hot takes. Sorry for the late drop btw! Been a busy couple weeks. For our November book we are going sleuthing with our new favorite tea shop owner...world famous designer Vera Wang! Well that's the name of her shop, but we love Vera Wong none the less. If you're looking for a cozy and heartwarming read about an early rising, tea loving, criminal---ly good chef, then Jesse Q. Sutanto has written the book for you! Can you figure out this whodunit???

Happy Halloween!!! We hope you all have a safe and fun Halloween night, but don't forget to go to the store tomorrow and buy a ton of 99% off candy. Grab a suit and join our guide Gyre in these wonderful caves for an adventure into the deep dark depths of your mind with The Luminous Dead. We all float down here...in the water that has flooded some of the tunnels, of course. If you love tight squeezes through solid rock, a maze of tunnels that only lead to more tunnels or tunnelers..., and creepy glowing spores that may or may not be psychedelic in nature, then we have the trip for you! And you would get paid to do it! We're sorry in advance for being idiots, but you probably already knew we were going into this so expect the expected.
