Blockchains, as we know them today, are imperative.

This means, we interact with every application needed to achieve a certain outcome onchain…we care about the process in achieving a specified end result.

The intent-centric future aims to flip this model on its head and usher in a different way of building and interacting with decentralized systems.

At the heart of this shift is the evolution from imperative to declarative programming in blockchain environments. This transition moves us away from specifying every step of a transaction (the 'how'), focusing instead on the desired outcomes (the 'what'). By embracing a declarative approach, blockchain technology becomes more intuitive and user-friendly, aligning more closely with the natural flow of human thought and reducing the complexity traditionally associated with onchain interactions.

In today’s video, Robbie sits down with Simon and Liesl to discuss Essential, the first declarative blockchain. Key to their design is a concept previously mentioned called 'intents'—declarations of what users want to achieve, without detailing the ‘how’.

We believe in a future of verifiable computation. The modular future cannot exist without zk.

After last weeks video asking "Will ZK eat the modular stack?" and realizing its all but guaranteed, we have set out to learn more about how zkVMs and ZK will make an impact. Our focus today centers on how RiscZero utilizes zk proofs and how zkVM works.

At the core of RiscZero's mission is the democratization of ZK technology, making it accessible and simpler for everyone. This effort is crucial as it enables the verification of computations in significantly less time than it takes to perform them, fostering scalable cross-verification without redundancy. We discussed the global state layer with regards to zkVM, and how Risc Zero is implemented into different rollup frameworks such as Sovereign Labs.

RiscZero’s use of the RISC-V architecture streamlines the integration of ZK proofs by allowing developers to leverage existing codebases, which drastically simplifies the development process.

VCs have been getting a lot of hate recently. The era of high FDV, low float launches may be coming to an end soon...or will it?

In today's conversation we sat down with Mads Mathiesen, a long-time crypto researcher and now leading research for an elite crypto VC Maven11. He was writing about data availability and Celestia in 2019-2020, before anyone was really paying attention to modularity.

We talk about Maven 11's big bets on modularity and why VCs are under fire in the current regime. We also talk about the evolution of crypto funding models in from the 2017 ICO craze to the structured funding models of today, the landscape has evolved dramatically. We also explore potential shifts in VC strategies to better align with the unique timelines and risks inherent in crypto projects.

After that, the conversation went into the big bets that Maven 11 has placed on modularity and the key players which they invested in early. Recently, Mads put out a post about the commoditization of complements strategy which a ton of the modular parts play. We discussed this in-depth and we found a lot of commonalities in our theses as well.

Did you know that Celestia was originally called LazyLedger? The idea behind this laziness stems from Celestia's minimalistic properties. By solely focusing on data availability with minimal smart contracts & execution, Celestia is able to provide cheap and secure data verification while outsourcing execution to other chains.

In today's episode, we set out to understand the origin story of not only Celestia, but also the now iconic Celestine Sloth Society NFT collection. The success and significance of the Celestine Sloths Society has came at a perfect time for the modular community.

We were joined by Zaki Manian, and Steven (sk) from the Celestine Sloths team and Nick White from Celestia to discuss the impact and origin story of the Sloths.

The Celestine Sloths Society was introduced with a fair launch exclusively for Celestia stakers, requiring one TIA token to mint each NFT, with a limit of one per wallet. They quickly soared in value and even surpassed Bad Kids in floor price, the biggest collection in Cosmos. We discussed this rise of popularlity as well as the choice of the sloth as a thematic symbol for the modular community which creatively reflects the concept of the 'lazy ledger'—a playful nod to Celestia. We went on to unveil potential future developments, like modular sloth bodies and the expansion of the sloth IP.

Many of the community members are excited for the potential modular project token distributions to Sloths (like Lava, Mitosis, Initia, Movement and others), we also touched on whether there could be a Sloth token in the future.

Horizontal or vertical scaling...which way, western man? In today's discussion, we're taking a closer look at Nil's strategic approach to blockchain scalability, focusing on the integration of horizontal scaling for Ethereum. We discuss the core idea behind Ethereum as the ultimate arbiter of truth for L2s, ensuring that any layer that claims to be an L2 can verify its activities through Ethereum's data availability and settlement guarantees. We also discuss the state fragmentation situation at hand—an inherent issue when new chains are created, which leads to a lack of a unified global state. The general idea and thesis we share is that we will see 1000s of appchains and the frameworks which are building for that future are in a good spot. In addition, we also believe there will be a ton of zkVMs (as introduced to us by Cem during this video) which will power rollups going forward. This is also part of our "we don't need any more traditional EVM, general purpose L2s" thesis. In today's video, were taking a closer look at Sovereign Labs. Sovereign is a project we've heard quite a bit about in the modular stack, which is builiding an SDK to launch zkRollups. Our discussion with the founder Cem Ozer, unpacks more of our thesis above. We started talking about Cem's reasoning behind the name "Sovereign Labs" and touched on the noisy neighbor problem which sovereign rollups solve. We went on to discuss how the Sovereign SDK utilizes Rust-based machines, is partnered with leading zkVM providers like Risc Zero & Succinct, interoperability baked in for every rollup within Sovereign, and how all of this leads to providing a great user experience. While we are particularly excited about Sovereign SDK, we managed to push back on some of the design choices such as not having their own underlying chain for distribution, and why a builder would choose the Sovereign SDK over a different stack like Cosmos SDK, OP stack, ZK stack and others. We also found a quick moment at the end to ask Cem about their plans to decentralize Sovereign Labs, and what that future may look like.
