Let’s Talk Redundancy: A Tale of Two Redundancies with Mark Villalovos

52m · Published 09 Mar 04:00

“Lightning never strikes twice” they say, until it does…

Episode 17 of our ‘Let’s Talk: Redundancy’ series sounds a little different as it comes from across the pond; Chicago, IL to be precise. I’m chatting with Mark Villalovos about not just one, but two redundancy stories.

Comparing one redundancy to another, we delve into all things money, marriage and the vital role that networking can play in getting back a sense of stability. Having been made redundant in the past, Mark feels he is back on shaky ground after being placed on furlough, which looks very different in the US when compared to the UK.

A head strong leader and professional ‘doer’, Mark encountered the all too familiar hurdle of ‘asking for help’. Mark reminds us that there is no need for you to suffer alone when there are people out there who want to help you! Past friends, colleagues, managers. Network, network, network – you may be surprised by just how many people are more than happy to advocate for you.

Let’s Talk Redundancy: Stuck in the Middle with Marco Beschizza

41m · Published 02 Mar 04:00

Although it may be less widely spoken about, it’s critical to remember that there are people at every stage of their redundancy journey. You are not the only one still trying to find a job, there is no transfer window, you have not missed the deadline.

In Episode 16 we return to our ‘Let’s Talk: Redundancy’ interview series and are joined by the wonderful Marco Beschizza – at the time of recording he is still very much in the ‘Messy Middle’ of his story after being made redundant in April 2020.

As yet another reminder that redundancy can hit at any level and any age – Marco is an experienced Global Head of Visual Merchandising & Creative in the retail industry.

Previously he’s progressed from national to international brands and has been leading teams and designing visuals to drive sales across the globe for years.

Marco’s redundancy story starts with being on mute on a call with 900 people and hearing they’ve all been made redundant. This was understandably a fair shock, especially for a manager familiar with the ‘traditional’ process!

Sitting now in what I call the ‘Messy Middle’, Marco and I talk about:

  • Redundancy during furlough and a company sale
  • The difference when you have a team
  • Retail Life vs Real Life
  • Figuring out your financials
  • Handling the awkward silence from a recruiters

2020 in Review: The Questions That Got Me Through

29m · Published 23 Feb 16:00

2020, how did it play out for you? A surprisingly good year given the circumstances or one you were so ready to close the door on?

After taking time to unpack and reflect on the past year I found some key questions that got me through it. They really worked and I’m still using them today.

In this episode I’m diving back into 2020 to share with you the exact questions (and even some of my personal answers!) that got me through and now continue to keep me focused on Dreaming and Doing.

Dedicating some time with a glass of wine or a cup of coffee and reflecting on experiences can give you some perspective, inspiration or answers that you never knew were there. It could provide you with the clarity you need to take the first step in a Dream you’ve been putting off, to seize an opportunity, or to help you move forwards in your day to day.

In this episode we’ll be looking at:

  • What makes you happy?
  • Deciding how to use your energy.
  • Celebrating your wins.
  • And what you can do right now.

As we work through these questions together remember that, although you might not feel like it right now, you are still a Dreamer and a Doer and that it’s completely fine to find that a little harder in the midst of a global pandemic.

Let’s Talk Redundancy: The Career Turning Point with Jon Seymour

51m · Published 09 Feb 04:00

Redundancy. It’s a big topic for a lot of people at the moment.

This episode is the first in a series of interviews exploring redundancy and what it means for different people. Every story is unique, whether you’re at the very beginning, in the messy middle, or are now embarking on something new – there is no right or wrong way to do it!

Being made redundant, especially when it’s unexpected, can make you feel lost, taken aback and unsure of what to do next. However, it is sometimes when all of our safety nets are taken away that we finally take that leap of faith into the unknown.

Jon’s redundancy story is a wonderful example of exactly that.

In this episode we are joined by the fantastic Jon Seymour who kindly shares with us how he tackled his own redundancy. Showing us that it is sometimes when all of our safety nets are taken away that we finally take that leap of faith into the unknown.

Whether you are going through, or have been through a redundancy, or even if you’ve never encountered redundancy, I know many different aspects of these interviews will resonate with you and provide you with some invaluable insights and inspiration to take away.

As we talk through Jon’s journey we will cover:

  • What comes next (& there’s a lot of choices you can make here!)
  • Looking at the Support Circles you have around you.
  • Reframing your own personal idea of what success looks like.
  • And long-term vs short-term short term planning.
