The year was 2000, and all eyes were on the stunning trio – Lara Dutta, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Dia Mirza – representing India simultaneously at international beauty pageants. While Lara, born to a Punjabi father, retired Wing Commander L.K. Dutta, and Anglo-Indian mother Jennifer Dutta, went on to create history by becoming the second-ever Indian to be crowned Miss Universe; her fellow pageant contestants too bagged winning titles.

YourStory Founder and CEO Shradha Sharma recently caught up with the critically-acclaimed actor on YourStory Inspirations series to talk about Vidya Balan’s  incredible and inspiring journey so far. Nepotism in Bollywood, has been a hotly debated topic for several years, and more so now. There are, of course, exceptions to the rule such as superstar Shah Rukh Khan who transitioned successfully from being a TV star to becoming the ‘Badshah of Bollywood’, without any connections or backing in the industry. However, the general impression is that for an outsider without any Bollywood connections or mentors, it’s difficult to survive, let alone thrive. But Vidya has thrived and how. Vidya started her film career in 2005 at the age of 26 with the Saif Ali Khan-starrer Parineeta based on the Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay novel of the same name, where she essayed an author-backed central character. The film picked up several awards including Vidya bagging the Filmfare award for the best debut.

Actor and entrepreneur Sushmita Sen in a video conversation with Dipti Nair talks about how it began and how it is going.  For those of us who were witness to the 1994 international beauty pageant that went on to crown India’s first Miss Universe, it was indeed a wow moment. “I was very happy to play a mother of three grown-up kids. But at no point was I underplaying my sexiness. Aarya is a sexy girl. She has this inbuilt mechanism that she is not trying to underplay because she is the mother of three teenagers,” Sushmita Sen says.

From broken bones to podium finishes how bike racer Ullas Santruptnanda throttled towards success. In the summer of 2018, his father was invited by Aprilia to a community event called the Aprilia Race Day, which was held in Coimbatore. That day on the track became the turning point in Ullas's career. He befriended the famed Rajini Krishnan, the national racing champion, who took Ullas under his wing to train him to become a champion. He signed Ullas to his racing academy called "Racr" and immediately flew him to Malaysia to train with the best.

Multinational human resource consulting firm Randstad’s India CEO Paul Dupuis has come a long way, from having to sleep on a park bench to becoming a corporate honcho. Last year Paul published his first book titled, The E5 Movement: Leadership through the Rule of Five, in which he talks about the critical aspects of leadership along with anecdotes from his life. “I read a quote by Richard Branson, it pushed me over the edge. It said, if you've had an interesting life. It's your duty to write a book and share it with the world,” says Paul of his decision to author the book, which is available on Amazon.

Today, the company has carved out a niche for itself in the luxury residential housing segment. Founded by Kaushik Roy and Vishal Jindal in 2015, Gurugram-based Biryani by Kilo aims to grow to 150-plus outlets across India in the next four years and expand to international destinations. Swiggy’s annual report on the country’s food ordering habits revealed that Indians ordered an average of 95 biryanis per minute, or 1.6 biryanis per second, in 2019. Analysts say foodtech may continue to bear the brunt of the coronavirus pandemic, with people staying away from restaurants and food outlets. Around 30 percent of smaller dine-in and delivery outlets might not survive this crisis. However, COVID-19 does not worry the founders. A report by Google and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) says the appetite for food ordering is set to rise with India’s online food ordering market expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 25-30 percent to touch $7.5- $8 billion by 2022.
