Flashback Friday: Matthew Coppedge - Amalgamation of passion & purpose

38m · Published 29 Apr 16:00

He went to UNC-Chapel Hill for his undergrad and did an internship with the Charlotte Hornets in their marketing department. He then fell in love with economic development and worked in downtown Durham for 12 years revitalizing downtown.

He then decided to try his hand at modeling. He posted every day to his Instagram and the things that got the most likes were him in a three-piece suit. So he gained thousands of followers and signed some deals as an influencer. Matthew shares that this is a tough industry to make it as a social media influencer. Landing deals have been difficult but he has seen some real success.

We talk about the life of a social media influencer. Matthew believes it is more about content creation than just being sponsored for work you're already doing.

Matthew talks about the work that he and his team were able to do in Durham to change the perception of the city. It was a rewarding time to see the changes made in the community and that's why he took the job in Gardner which is growing exponentially.

We talk about the Smoffice (The world's smallest office) and the efforts Matthew and his team made to help get the word out on the work they were doing in Durham. Tech Crunch and Fast Company picked up the story and it went viral. They were nominated for the most original chamber project in the world and won!

We talk about the power of community. What it means to Matthew and how it leads to real growth.

"We're building Garner for the next 50-75 years. That's what we are doing right now. Garner is one of the only communities that is a little farther behind most of the other cities in the triangle and we can build what we want." -Matthew

"Life is short. Just do things." -Matthew

Flashback Friday: Jessica Bettencourt - Showing up when it’s terrifying

41m · Published 22 Apr 16:00

We talk about Jessica's new book, "I Almost Cancelled: Showing Up When Fear Tells You to Stay Home." Jessica Bettencourt knows what it’s like to face rejection, feel like she doesn’t belong, and second-guess big decisions. But she also knows that we have to face fear and risk failure to live out our calling. In I Almost Cancelled, Jessica shares how one scary decision after another led to a life she couldn’t even imagine. Her storytelling and southern charm will have you laughing at times and crying at others. She shows you step by step how to overcome self-doubt and build the life you’ve always wanted-not the life others tell you to want.

We get to hear Jessica's love story of meeting her future husband on a spring break trip. She was raised in a strict Christian home and would not have been allowed to go to spring break in Florida to galavant around the beach in a bikini, but her friend heard of an evangelist who was holding revival services. So they would spend the afternoons on the beach and evenings in the church. During the trip, she met her future husband on the beach, dated long distance for a long time, and eventually, they got married.

"Thankfully, I kept showing up, so I wanted to cancel. There are days I still want to cancel, but I have a no-cancellation policy in my life, and I show up." - Jessica Bettencourt

By having a no-cancellation policy you will train yourself to not put things on your calendar that you will dread.

We talk through how to say "no" even to things that are good things but may not align with your goals at this time.

"Everything is figureoutable and most things are fixable." - Jessica Bettencourt

We spend time talking about the difference between leadership and management. And how Jessica grew her first business and eventually handed over the reins to her husband who had a much different approach to leadership than her and the lessons she learned along the way.

Find out more about Jessica, her book, and connect with her on social media on her website.

Flashback Friday: Zack Hunt - Don’t be an a#$hole for Jesus

36m · Published 15 Apr 16:00

As a teenager in the buckle of the Bible Belt, Zack Hunt was convinced the rapture would happen at any moment. Being ready meant never missing church, never sinning, and always listening to Christian radio. But when the rapture didn't happen, Hunt's tightly wound faith began to fray. If he had been wrong about the rapture, what else about his faith might not hold water?

Part memoir, part tour of the apocalypse, and part call to action, Unraptured traces how the church's focus on escaping to heaven has it mired in decay. Teetering on the brink of irrelevancy in a world rocked by refugee crises, climate change, war, and rumors of war, the church cannot afford to focus on the end times instead of following Jesus in the here and now. Unraptured uses these signs of the times to help readers reorient their understanding of the gospel around loving and caring for the least of these.

We talk about how Zach grew up in the bubble and how he grew in college. Now Zach still finds the way of Jesus as attractive although he feels less excited by many aspects of organized religion.

Fundamentalism is a lot like racism. It's not something you're born with, it is something you're taught.

Zach talks about meeting his wife in college who wasn't afraid to call him on his way of thinking. He also describes meeting with a college professor to talk about his views on theology where he thought his hardline approach would be rewarded his professor challenged him to start with an understanding that we are living in the end times now.

After initially getting angry and rebelling for a couple of years in what Zach calls a pretty typical rebellion for a Christian kid (trying alcohol, listening to rock music, and getting a tattoo) he began to understand what his professor was saying. Zach felt that when you look at the Bible and need to interpret it you should begin from the standpoint of love and not fear. If your interpretation doesn't cause you to love God and your neighbor then your interpretation is wrong.

You can follow Zack on social and check out his book on Amazon.
