Finding New Ways to Grieve and Understand Death During Covid with Caroline Schrank, Funeral Director of Down to Earth Funerals

43m · Published 21 May 14:00

Of all the topics that bring us to our edge, to a place of most raw vulnerability, it’s death and dying….and particularly during the time of the Covid-19 pandemic. We’ve either experienced it or we fear it. When we were approached by Caroline Shrank, director of Down to Earth Funerals in NYC, to talk about the challenges and opportunities to redefine our relationship to death and dying, we knew that we needed to step into our own fears, and welcome this conversation. This episode concludes our corona virus pandemic mini-series, and we knew we couldn’t close it without stepping into the places we’re most scared to go.

Caroline Schrank is the founder and funeral director of Down to Earth Funerals based in New York City. She is an extraordinary empathetic person and perfectly poised to head DTE and forge a new direction in funeral care.

Her former career as a production coordinator setting up photography shoots for magazines, choosing locations for fashion catalog shoots, coupled with her background in event and party planning, uniquely positions her as someone who can handle a myriad of details effortlessly. The death of both her parents opened her to the idea that death and grief could become so much more personalized, NOT one size fits all. We’re amazed by what she’s done.

In this episode Randi and Caroline dive into:

-Being a funeral director during Covid and how funeral directors are also the front line workers, often replacing the role family members often hold.

How the virus is preventing people from gathering to heal together and witnessing the double sadness of those who can’t be physically present. How is Caroline holding space for it?

-Discovering new ways to grieve at this time. Why technology has become a tool for grieving, connecting, and support.

-Randi’s own experience processing loss and turning to yoga and movement for healing.

-How to understand death and establish a new relationship to it- the power of processing with community.

-Caroline’s advice on the importance of having a strong foundation in your life so you can be ready for the difficult times that come your way.

The Healing Side of Science with Scientist Dr. Annabelle Morgan!

53m · Published 07 May 15:00

Nowadays, we don’t always equate science with healing. Science can save our lives (the greatest innovations have occurred inside of science labs), but it can also be driven by big business and controlled by government regulations. The story you are about to hear is one of scientific innovation, brilliant healing power, and how the two merged together. Welcome to the podcast, our first ever woman scientist, Dr. Annabelle Morgan! Dr. Annabelle has a PhD in Cell and Developmental Biology; she’s a mother of 4, and wife to Grammy Award winning reggae artist, Gramps Morgan. Dr. Annabelle is a cancer researcher, a consultant to both medical science businesses and government, and most importantly, a mother who took her science chops and her powerful intuition, and used it to cure her son of tragic brain-related injury using hemp-derived compounds that she herself made. Now, she works to merge science and the natural space through implementing cannabis and/or plant compounds in general into current modern medicine. More recently Dr. Annabelle has been pulled into some potential research for co-vid 19 treatment (you’ll hear more about that later in the episode).

Dr.Annabelle is also on the advisory board for our podcast sponsor Quanta! -Dr.Annabelle’s most significant life change with the birth of her son who has had over 38 percent of his brain resected as a result of uncontrollable seizures. She tells the journey she went on to ultimately develop a natural hemp-derived medicine to replace her son’s medications that ultimately cured him.

-How Dr. Annabelle found her purpose and calling in helping others through merging science and the natural space. Plus why she fell in love with cannabis!

-How she does it all! What it’s like to balance life as a scientist, mother of 4, and as part of the team of scientists working towards a Co-Vid 19 treatment.

-Why did she choose to work with a company like Quanta? How their technology works and how it allows you to get the full benefits of whatever you are absorbing, in a completely natural and harmless way.
