Fashion: Brand w. Tom Kay of Finisterre

13m · Published 21 May 08:02

Brands bring together every element of the fashion industry to create a product that, when done well, people fall in love with. Great brands build up a loyal following, start trends, innovate and offer products that look beautiful and function brilliantly. But the best ones do all of this while pushing every element of their company to behave in a responsible and ethical way at every stage. A great example of a brand like this is Finisterre.

Tom Kay founded Finisterre in 2003 when he started making clothing above a surf shop. His ambition was to create clothing that enabled people to spend time by the cold British sea and over the past 17 years has evolved the business into one of the most interesting brands in the UK.

Tom speaks with a humble wisdom at a million miles an hour. When we caught up we covered lots of ground from the world's first fully recyclable wetsuit to sheep farming to staying true to yourself and your values as you grow in size. Hear Tom Kay talk about these subjects and many more on episode 3 of Good Good Great.

Fashion: Manufacturing w. Flora Davidson of SupplyCompass

18m · Published 20 May 07:50

Manufacturing is an integral part of the fashion industry, however, until recently, few people talked about it. Brands kept quiet about their processes and sometimes didn’t even know how their own products were made. This was the issue Flora Davidson wanted to address when she co-founded SupplyCompass. The company calls itself 'the future of product development and production management for fashion brands and manufacturers.' Sounds grand, but Flora with her co-founder Gus has created a company that backs it up.

When Flora joined Al in the studio we were captivated by her knowledge and enthusiasm for manufacturing. She spoke to Good Good Great about the issues she’s faced, the solutions she’s created and made us think about the things we’d never considered about manufacturing before.

Before you hit play, guess how many hands touch a t-shirt while it is being made? You’ll find the answer to this and much more on episode 2 of Good Good Great.

Fashion: Design w. Alexander Taylor

20m · Published 19 May 07:46

At the design stage of a product’s life decisions are made that can have massive impacts further down the line. An extra button here or zip there can mean more people needed during manufacturing, more transportation of raw materials, a more complex recycling process and the list goes on. It can be all too easily forgotten when we’re creating something beautiful for people to wear. However, for Alexander Taylor and his team it’s something that’s always front of mind.

Alexander was responsible for the first shoe Adidas created in collaboration with Parley. Made from recycled ocean plastics Alexander was briefed just 8 days before it was due to launch at the UN. He spoke about this experience and his new fashion project ATID launching soon.

We were drawn in by Alexander’s considered and wise words when he joined Al in the studio. The conversation covered subjects such as the opportunity for designers to create responsible change, the power of collaboration and what innovation really means to him.
