Here’s the thing, I’ve spent the better part of my life participating in just about any sport you can name and as you know I’ve also done my fair share of obstacle course races. I’ve sailed through all of these endeavors with nary a scratch on my body - but recently, I was humbled.

At an early age I became masterful in the art of using self-deprecating sense of humor. Call it a defense mechanism or the ability to disarm a bully from any potential insults they may swing my way, I used this skill in the same manner Michelangelo used a mallet and chisel to create the statue of David. Nobody was going to beat me to the punch when it came to pointing out my own shortcomings. But did I go too far?

In this moment, Dave reflects on coming to grips with the fact that he’s not quite the mountain man he thought he was. He talks through some issues he recently experienced while becoming emotionally paralyzed at the hands of a mountain backroad and who (all) got him through the anxiety. Oddly enough, he had a purely tranquil moment with a black bear on that same trip.
