Unlocking Business Freedom: How to Sell Your Company and Set Yourself Free"

36m · Published 16 Oct 00:00

In this episode of the Invest in You podcast, host Fredrik is joined by guest Rob Goddard, a business advisor and expert in selling companies. They discuss the importance of preparing a business for sale and the key factors that can make or break a deal. Rob talks about the need for business owners to make themselves redundant and build a strong team to ensure the business is not reliant on their day-to-day involvement. He also highlights the significance of having robust financial reporting and a clear growth plan to attract potential buyers. Rob shares valuable insights on the common mistakes business owners make when selling their companies and offers practical advice on how to navigate the process successfully.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The importance of determining a "magic number" when selling a business: The "magic number" refers to the capital sum needed from the sale of the business to start a new chapter in the owner's life. It is not necessarily the value of the business, but rather the amount required to sustain their desired lifestyle.
  • Making the business owner redundant: To make a business saleable, the owner needs to build a succession plan and surround themselves with a capable team. This ensures that the business is not reliant on the owner's day-to-day involvement and increases its transferability to a new entity.
  • The significance of financial reporting: Having up-to-date and robust financial reporting, including monthly management accounts, is crucial when selling a business. It provides potential buyers with a clear understanding of the business's financial performance and future prospects.
  • The need for a growth plan: Many business owners lack a clear growth plan for their business. Having a well-defined growth plan, supported by reliable sales forecasts and a narrative that substantiates the numbers, can significantly increase the value of the business and attract potential buyers.
  • The challenges of owner reliance: Businesses heavily reliant on the owner's involvement can be difficult to sell. Buyers typically expect a ready-made management team in place, and if the owner is the sales director or at the centre of everything, it can hinder the sale process. Making the owner redundant and building a capable team is essential for a successful business sale.

BEST MOMENTS

"I think it's the, I like educating business owners because most business owners have never sold before."

"So I've already seen their accounts by that point. So I give them a really low ball offer, right? I'll say, if I think it's probably worth 3 million, I'll say, do you know what? I think it's worth one and a half. Would you accept that today?"

"I want them to make themselves redundant and, and the business isn't reliant on their day to day input, expertise, knowledge, contacts."

"If you can show a reliable sales forecast based on real customers and how you retain people, all of a sudden now you can multiply the value quite easily."

"If you want to be found, so if you're a candidate and you want people to find you, to head something for good positions, they need to be able to quickly look at your profile and work out what you do."

"Well, I've actually only had a limited number of sales. And as you talked about, you have to be motivated. You have to, um. You have to really believe in what you're selling." - Charlie

Interview with David Riemer

1h 16m · Published 14 Feb 00:00

In this episode Fredrik chats with David Riemer, tech and ad executive, and marketer. He is the author of ‘Get Your Startup Story Straight ; The Definitive Storytelling Framework For Innovators And Entrepreneurs.’ He guides people to create the narrative of their startup, sharing their beginning motivations, their aims and values to create understanding between themselves and their target audience.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • David has always been a narrative storyteller, has experience in journalism, and so has turned this skill towards startup business. Thinking in terms of a narrative, shifts the focus and viewpoint on the project.
  • Stories have a structure. Overlay a classic story structure onto your innovation story and understand the motivations of your customer, the protagonist, and how your product or service is going to solve their problem.
  • One of the best ways to be successful as a business is to make a meaningful connection with your customer and understand them on a human level.
  • When you are telling a story, part of the narrative is conveyed by your facial expressions. Bear this in mind in zoom meetings and FaceTime. Show your expressions.
  • Include a human factor in your story that anybody can connect with no matter what your product is.

BEST MOMENTS

‘I have seen this incredible thing happen when I talk to a founder about their project, and we talk about it in the context of a story. Who is the protagonist in your story? And they’ll say, “I am, I built this thing”. No, the protagonist in a product story is not you, it’s the customer.’

‘You have to know who the protagonist is, you have to know what their motivations are and you have to have some insights into what’s motivating them. You have to understand the conflict in the story. You have to understand how their life will be better if they use your product.’

‘People don’t care about what you say but they do care about the way you make than feel.’

‘Why is he getting excited about this point? He’s waving his hands around. We all have to do that in a way that’s natural to us, but our bodies are part of the instrument we use as a storyteller, and our faces.’

ABOUT THE GUEST

David is a long-time tech executive and marketer.

He led the ad agency J. Walter Thompson in San Francisco, held senior marketing roles at two start-ups and was VP Marketing at Yahoo! (during their heyday).

David now runs Box Out Industries where he works with entrepreneurs, product managers and marketers to develop and convey their product stories.

He also started Spiral Staircase Productions to collaborate with artists and is currently developing two original musicals. David teaches at Berkeley-Haas Business School and works with several accelerators throughout the Bay Area.

Buying Companies with Moran Prober

50m · Published 07 Feb 00:00

Today Fredrik interviews international businessman Moran Prober. Based in Cyprus, Moran has business in U.S.A, U.K., Canada, Australia, Israel, Panama and Cyprus. He’s an expert in acquiring businesses for himself and his clients and is the founder of Acquisitions.com, helping people find the company that’s right for them.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Moran helps his clients buy profitable established business, finding the right sector and the best deals including financing.
  • Single run businesses with one owner are not easily saleable entities especially if it is a model that’s easily reproduced by an interested party.
  • Financing options are very varied and there are many sources to fund the acquisition. The price often depends on the the relationship with the buyer.
  • It’s takes time to acquire businesses so it doesn’t always pay to sell them straight away. You can acquire more business and merge them or grow the business.

BEST MOMENTS

‘In the last 3 years we helped and supported over 100 acquisitions, usually in the range of 1 to 40 million in revenue.’

‘If you have one messy business and you want to buy 10 more businesses, you’ll just end up with 10 messy businesses.’

‘It comes down to, why are you buying the business in the first place? For example, a lot of businesses buy other businesses for a very specific asset. Companies buying companies just for the talent.’

‘We are making sure that we are helping them in the process, to be in the same level of knowledge us us.’

Invest in You : Interview with Donnie Boivin

44m · Published 31 Jan 00:00

An impromptu and spontaneous transatlantic interview between Fredrik and his guest, Donnie Boivin. Author, businessman, coach, motivational speaker and podcaster, Donnie helps others to achieve a change in mindset and propel them forward to achieving their aims. He speaks candidly about the experiences and influences that have shaped his life and how he achieves a healthy momentum in his work.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Fredrik and Donnie both joined the Marines in their respective countries after finishing college.
  • After a long career in sales Donnie launched his business Success Champions and hit a steep learning curve and now passes what he learned from his mistakes to others to facilitate them to achieve a easier lifestyle with their businesses.
  • A common mistake made by both Donnie and Fredrik is to accept too many tasks and become bogged down by process. The trick is to work on the business not in the business.
  • Building a business involves a lot of bad days to get through and its best to keep these in perspective as, eventually, they will just be cautionary tales you can tell later.
  • With modern online instruction provided by information platforms like Google and YouTube you can keep yourself up to date without spending huge amounts of cash on training.
  • Sanctuary is important. Donnie has a farm that is isolated from his business interests to which he can escape.

BEST MOMENTS

‘I’m not a guy that does well with authority and people telling me what to do. When you’re going through boot camp or whatever and you realise that these people are going to keep yelling at you for a long period of time you really question your choices in life.’

‘If you had cash, money of any sort then yes! I whatever that was that you needed done so we found ourselves doing websites, graphic design and *@$t that we had no business doing.’

‘If you don’t educate them on how you will actually sell to them and how they can get involved to make this happen then the closing might be very odd later.’

‘Being a salesperson is the only profession in the world where you will literally get rejected every day.’

‘At the end of the day, do what’s right by you and I think that goes for your business as well.’

ABOUT THE GUEST

Donnie Boivin is a motivational speaker, author, podcaster, businessman and a coach that helps to change the game in mindset and success. His book “How to be a success champion: Business Strategy for Badasses” is a story of his own life that has inspired thousands to get out of their own way and go for it. Everybody Works In Sales - Interview with Niraj Kapur

47m · Published 24 Jan 00:00

Fredrik interviews Niraj Kapur, online business coach and expert on using LinkedIn. Previously a sales trainer, Niraj found himself without a job at the beginning of the COVID crisis and switched to online training. He now specialises in using LinkedIn to achieve and facilitate his clients business goals via his training and coaching company Everybody Works In Sales.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The importance of formality in virtual selling and online meetings is paramount. Put as much effort into your prep and appearance as you would to a face to face meeting.
  • The similarities between online dating and online selling are numerous. Check out your client/dates profile to see what you have in common. Do not ask for a client meeting/date too quickly as it can unnerve potential customers/partners. Do not talk about yourself non stop.
  • LinkedIn posts can be about any of your current business challenges you face; slow paying customers, staff retention etc. The most popular posts can be the ones that discuss how your personal life interfaces with your business life.
  • Make the effort to meet your LinkedIn support network as it can be invaluable.
  • Stop relying on email automation. Face to face contact and online meeting platforms such as zoom is still the best way of doing things.

BEST MOMENTS

‘On a business level people would say that they know me as a coach who leads from the heart and gets results for clients.’

‘I have grown m LinkedIn profile from 5000 people to 18,000 people. The really big growth has been from me talking about my vulnerability and the difficulty of being single in your late forties.’

‘Personal posts work. They just do. On Father’s Day this year all my friends who posted pictures of their kids saying “this is my why” did so well.’

‘Get on a plane, get on a bus, get on a train and go see people face to face. It’s one of the best things you can do to strengthen relationships and business is relationships.’

‘If you have your phone there anyway and your too shy to do anything if you have the LinkedIn app you can actually send a voice mail and if you do this you actually stand out.’

Interview with Brendan Kane

45m · Published 17 Jan 00:00

In his episode of Invest in You, Fredrik talks to business and brand advisor Brendan Kane, author of ‘Hook Point : How To Stand Out In A 3 Second World’ and CEO and founder of Hook Point agency.  Brendan talks about how he started in his specialty of digital branding and publicity for the entertainment industry after initially attending film school and moving onwards to movie advertising. He details how he has helped many corporations and individuals find their “Hook Point.”

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Initially planning to be a film producer Brendan found that film school offered no guidance or insight into the business side of film making so he decided to educate himself.
  • Brendan found his ‘Hook Point’ was his ability to assist film makers with post production online publicity of a movie. In 2007 he pioneered he idea of using YouTube influencers to publicise movies.
  • Brendans company Hook Point helps people communicate at scale to customers and attempts to move marketing principles on with a digital forum to get their message out there with a more modern strategy.
  • Platform algorithms have one job and that is to retain viewers so the longer they spend viewing the video the more likely that video will be seen by more viewers.
  • Brendan spends a lot of his time meeting people and learning what they do to enhance his skills and recommends actual face to face communication as a learning tool.

BEST MOMENTS

‘As I said “I wanted to be a film producer” I could see everybody’s eyes glaze over, you’re Just one of a million. So I had to reassess and find what is my way to stand out, what is my “Hook Point.”’

‘At my core I’m an entrepreneur. I want to build things and I found I was asking for permission to do things more than actually getting to execute.’

‘As marketer’s or just people who want to disseminate a message at scale we are competing against hundreds of millions of messages and we need to have more nuance, more sophistication, more psychology in the way that we are constructing our content.’

‘Most business owners have spent years mastering their craft. However, the more you become an expert in something the less you can distill it down into its simplest form.’

ABOUT THE GUEST

Brendan Kane is an outside of the box thinker, speaker and author who empowers brands to scale by helping them stand out and beat competition in crowded and oversaturated markets. He is the author of the international best-selling book One Million Followers and the newly released Hook Point: How To Stand Out In A 3 Second World, as well as the founder and CEO of the Hook Point agency.
