The Story of Mr. Freeman. A lesson in happiness and ruin. The story of Mr. Freeman is the story of every person who has tried to make good in their life. An attempt to provide more for their family and enjoy life to its fullest extent. Mr. Freeman was an advertising specialist in the early 1900s who over the course of 25 years accumulated over $1 million in income for himself and his family and had nothing to show for it. He wrote an article in a local magazine as a confession to his creditors in an attempt to salvage his reputation and provide a way back. Napoleon Hill reprinted his story with permission in the 16 laws of success as a lesson in a very common process that many people go through. This process is simple, the more you make, the more you spend. This is tied directly to our habits, whichever direction they take us. In Mr. Freeman‘s case, he had a strong habit of spending and that is what his life had to show for it. He states that he had no regrets for the life he lived. He did understand though, in the end, that he did not need to spend 100% of everything he made to live that life. That there were many opportunities to tuck-away a portion of his income that would’ve saved him from his debt crisis. https://www.keybravo.com/keybravo-blog/2020/4/28/a-broke-millionaire

The Habit of Saving is the fourth Law of Success and is built on the other three Laws that came before it. As a quick recap: The Law of Master Mind, The Law of Definite Purpose, and The Law of Self-Confidence. These laws are also supported by The Law of Attraction and now, the Law of Habit.

The basic premise of the Law of The Habit of Saving is to constantly save a proportion of your income to be used as a bailiwick against emergencies and to be wisely invested in an endeavor that builds assets.

Without these savings, it will be impossible to achieve financial freedom because there are only so many hours in a day you can work. At some point, you must have your money working as hard as you do.

This Law is foundationally built on the Law of Habit which affects every part of our lives. We are the summation of our daily activities. These activities repeated just a few times quickly become habits, and over time, are done with no conscious effort.

Right now, your earning potential is limited by the financial habits you currently have in place. Combined with the Law of Attraction, not only are you doing the wrong things for financial freedom you are attracting the wrong people and circumstances?

Insights from the 16 Laws of Success by Napoleon Hill, published in 1928.

This article is the final installment of chapter 3 to the 16 Laws of Success talking about the Law of Self-Confidence.

In the last part of the this chapter, Mr. Hill makes a few final points to consider. He reminds us that fear is what holds us back from fulfilling our potential and achieving our success. That demanding success must be backed up with intelligent action. We cannot go around wishing for things to change. The desire must burn so brightly that we are pulled into the activities to make it true. Finally, he reveals the true source of self-confidence.

Self-Confidence is a result of understanding one thing completely. That one thing is “ourselves”. The ancient proverb to “Know Thyself” becomes the cornerstone of our confidence. For with it comes the understanding of both our potential and limitations. When you truly understand yourself, you begin to believe in yourself based on facts not wishes. This in turn, inspires others to believe in you as well. So resolved is your confidence expressed through your demeanour, and more importantly your actions, that others will delight in the discovery in finding someone worthy of following.

In final summary: Self-Knowledge = Self-Confidence

Insights from the 16 Laws of Success by Napoleon Hill, published 1928.

This article is part 2 of chapter 3 on the chapter on Self-Confidence. In this reading, Mr. Hill has moved past the fears that hold us back and into defining the benefits of having Self-Confidence.

The most common difference between people of success and those who are not is the amount of self-confidence they have in their selves. Another way to interpret self-confidence is as self-belief. The ability to have complete faith in yourself and your ability to achieve whatever you set your mind to. The previous lessons of Master Mind and Definite Chief Aim play a more significant role when applied with Self-Confidence.

It is impossible to influence another person to be part of your Master Mind if you have no confidence. Why would anyone follow someone who is unsure of themselves? People want to be led with surety.

This is also why achieving a Definite Chief Aim is strongly based on the level of faith in oneself to get it done. This faith is brought through the habit of self-confidence.

The greatest tool we have today to help us develop this skill is auto-suggestion. To be frank, it is because of auto-suggestion that you may not have the level of confidence you need today. Because the tool works both for and against us depending on the words spoken in our own mind. Which in turn, become the dominant thoughts that attract similar people, events, and circumstances.

So what is Self-Confidence?

  • It is reflected in how others feel about you because of how you feel about yourself.
  • It is projected through your demeanor and how you carry yourself.
  • It is tied directly to having a Definite Chief Aim and a sense of purpose.

Insights from the 16 Laws of Success by Napoleon Hill, published in 1928.

Napoleon Hill, in writing this part of the third chapter on Self-Confidence, focused on the necessity of struggle. For without struggle there would not be an opportunity to gain self-confidence. He has gone so far as to suggest that struggle is the key component of success.

In this part of the chapter, the main idea to understand is that an easy life is a handicapped life. Only through struggle can we build our self-confidence through accomplishing that which we thought of as difficult. Doing easy things doesn’t do anything for our ability to do hard things later. Only by doing hard things can we be ‘educated’ on how to do harder things in the future.

According to Mr. Hill, most people sit in the back row of life. They let fear put them into places where they can be easily forgotten. Not to stick out for fear of criticism. To hold back one's potential so as not to offend those around them. So, they do only what is required and nothing more and have a level of success to match.

The great thing is that this does not need to be the truth. The power of auto-suggestion works both ways. While it was being used to let the fear hold you back, it can be used to unleash your potential. Mr. Hill talks about a salesman who was reclined to sit in the back row of life until he was inspired by a lecturer to do something more. So this salesman chose to work only for commissions and picked the 12 hardest merchants to sell to.

He understood that through the struggle, he would learn more about sales. He also used the power of auto-suggestion by reading a statement, that these merchants would purchase from him, day and night. Within his target month, he had sold to all 12 merchants. This is the power of auto-suggestion to overcome past transgressions on our self-confidence.

There is a small note to the wives of men in this chapter encouraging them to be supportive of their husbands. It is understood the lengths a man would go through with the encouragement of someone he loves. Mr. Hill suggests the wives have more influence on the success of their family through the encouragement of their husbands then what is openly talked about.

This section of the reading ends with an example of a personal creed that was written by an encouraging wife to her husband. This creed is packed full of positive auto-suggestions that all start with the phrase “I believe”.

The Third Law of Success is the Law of Confidence. Unfortunately, we cannot begin to discuss the power of confidence until we talk about what is holding us back. The number one thing that holds back our confidence is fear. According to Napoleon Hill, there are six basic fears which all other fears are derived from. These six fears are the main drivers of our negative behaviors.

We are not born with these fears. They are given to us in the form of social heredity. This is important to understand because it means that our natural state is fearlessness. It also means that we are capable of returning to that Fearless state by dealing with and overcoming these fears.

Here are the Six Fears.

  1. Fear of Poverty
  2. Fear of Old Age
  3. Fear of Criticism
  4. Fear of the Loss of Someone’s Love
  5. Fear of Ill Health
  6. Fear of Death
