WillGil is one-half of the Hip Hop Review Podcast, where he and his co-host VonteThePro discuss new and throwback mainstream albums in the Hip Hop world. It is a light, engaging, and honest podcast. Both WillGil and VonteThePro provide thoughtful and concise reviews of albums and mixtapes—all while expressing preconceived notions that Will and Vonte (and all of us) have when listening to a new album. WillGil took some time to chat with us about his upbringing on the West Coast and the inception of the Hip Hop Review Podcast. Jabee is a rapper from Oklahoma City with a story to tell. Armed with memories of his own experiences filtered through the lens of books by the likes of Huey Newton, Assata Shakur, and Kurt Vonnegut, Jabee's album, "Black Future," is full of socially conscious and introspective songs that bang, a rarity in present day Hip-Hop. He acknowledges the past and the present, but as the album's title suggests, Jabee looks towards the future and inspires the listener to get active and create the desired outcome for oneself and one's community. Joshua Harris was the Green Party candidate for mayor of Baltimore City in 2016, securing a remarkable 10%-13% of the vote, but don't confuse him for a politician. He is an activist who works in the community on issues of civic engagement, educating people on where to get needed information about what is happening in the communities they live in, and also training citizens on grassroots organization. He is also a proponent of the arts and how they can help to build strong communities, and his non-profit, Hollins Creative Placemaking, does just that. We speak with Josh about his upbrining and move to Baltimore, how he was able to make it, his motivations and how he got into politics, and what's next for him post election. Mikel Miles is the creator of Samurai Shin, a dope new comic book series that is poised to make an impact in the comic book world. There isn't much representation of Black people or Hip-Hop culture in the anime world, but Miles blends the worlds by incorporating Afro-Asian characters into his comic, as well as offering a nice laid back Hip-Hop soundtrack for your listening pleasure while you read. This episode is an interesting look into the creative process of someone creating something totally new from the ground up, and is definitely a must listen for anyone who is trying to do the same.
