Ep.192 Nursery wholesale insights for the whole industry - Paul Plant (Nursery Manager, 4BC Garden Talkback Presenter)

1h 25m · Published 18 Feb 06:00

In this episode, I interview Paul Plant about what we're getting wrong as a whole industry when working with wholesale nurseries in particular, and how we can tighten up our game.

I wanted to know stuff like, how are miscommunications and poor choices costing landscapers, arborists and horticulturists time, money, and project efficiency?

Are horticultural qualifications necessary for a career shift into the wholesale nursery?

How can we prevent fire ants sneaking into our landscapes through potted plants?

And what's the deal with tissue culture propagation?

Ozbreed root rot treatment trial. https://www.ozbreed.com.au/summary-plants-in-various-wet-feet-conditions/

  • Trial tested root rot treatments on Tanika Lomandra longifolia, known for thriving in dry slopes and flat areas and temperate wet, but struggling in humid, wet conditions. The trial year was humid, the soil extra wet and Phytpothera was present.
  • 8 plants were in each treatment. Agri-Fos treatment resulted in 0% survival, indicating ineffectiveness against root rot diseases in Tanika. Control group showed a 25% survival rate, while Phyto guard and Rhizovital treatment had a 62.5% survival rate.
  • For humid wet soils with root rot diseases, treating Tanika Lomandra longifolia with 1 g/L Phyto guard and 4 mL/L Rhizovital increases survival rate

Ep.189 Horticulturist vs property developer - Karen Fuller

1h 3m · Published 17 Jan 06:00

Have you ever tendered for a property development project, only to be rejected for some unknown reason?

Why is it that some people are able to win work from property developers, while others seem to struggle with this type of client?

It may have something to do with your ability to meet them on their own wavelength.

Sometimes, as horticulturists, ecologists, landscape architects and landscapers, we can get a bit caught up in out own world. This episode is a step into the (sometimes scary) mind of a property developer, who also just happens to be my mum.

Ep.188 Rabbit pest management (IPM) - Dr Ian Smith (Bug Bites)

59m · Published 07 Jan 06:00

Do you know the secret to controlling rabbits within the landscape?

Whether you're responsible for a public park, a farm, or a private property that's home to these garden-destroying pests, you'll want to control them in the most ethical way possible.

The secret is a decisive, multi-pronged operation designed to wipe them all out in a single season. There are a number of methods to use, including locating warren entries, exposing them to predators, waiting for the right time to responsibly use baits, collapsing their warrens, and a commitment to regular monitoring.

Dr Ian Smith is an ecologist that's worked in the agriculture, ecology and natural resource management sectors. He's also the host of the Bug Bites short episodes on this podcast.

Ep.185 Growing joy at work: Plants as self care - Maria Failla (Growing Joy)

54m · Published 17 Dec 06:00

Do you still feel the passion you had for plants when you started this game? Or are you just turning up to work each day, going through the motions?

My guest Maria Failla from the Growing Joy Podcast is here to teach us how to "connect with nature," "find our joy," or practice "self care," even if those terms don't really resonate with us.

Plant care is a form of therapy that's being used to treat a wide range of mental health conditions, disabilities, and people of different ages. Even if you don't have access to a horticultural therapist, you can still take advantage of the healing power of plants by slowing down, breathing steadily, and turning your attention to the plants that you care for.

Maria treats her mind like a garden where she sows seeds of joy, gratitude and wellness, and celebrates her harvest each and every day. As she points out, there will always be the weeds of negative emotion but through practice, we can learn to recognise and work with them so we don't feel overwhelmed.

Ep.184 Nine jobs in horticulture - SWAPCAST - Maria Failla (Growing Joy)

1h 8m · Published 10 Dec 06:00

In ep.172 I talked about ten career pathways in amenity horticulture. It was a quick run through some of the most important jobs in our industry, and pathways you can take throughout each sector.

Whether you're a gardening enthusiast who's open to a career change, you're a hort student unsure of the end destination, or you're an established pro looking to deepen your understanding of the industry as a whole, don't miss this episode because you'll learn:

-What the difference is between jobs in propagation, wholesale and production nurseries,
-What the difference is between landscape architects and landscape designers,
-How to get into horticulture media,
-And much, much more...
