On this weeks episode of Chelsea in the Meadow, Mimi and I explore the many different components of soil. We looked at soil layers and the importance of organic matter, macro and micro nutrients, as well as the roles they play in plant growth, how the pH and organisms affect plants and their health, where to get a soil test done and how to do one yourself, and most importantly the harmful truth of using pesticides and herbicides on your garden plants. This week we begin with our five minute meadow update, then jump back into beginning your first home garden part two. We dig a little deeper into the different degrees of sun and shade. We go on to explain the different planting zones and how to figure out what zone you are in. We close with the importance of a water source and finding a location close to home so that your garden can get all of the attention it needs. On today's episode, Mimi and I kickoff with a summary of farm activities from the past week. We then run through some considerations for beginning your garden at home. We explain how the first steps would include: deciding the style of garden you would like to have, picking a location with optimal sunlight and enough space for everything you would like to grow, forming a garden bed with enough depth that your plants will be happy, and not forgetting to add predator protection so that your plants won't be damaged from unwanted pests.
