Putting yourself on the spot

“Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen.”- Brené Brown

🙋‍♀️ The truth is that there have been many occasions when frankly I thought, I didn't know how I was going to manage to do this LinkedIn live last week.

The thing is I am committed to doing my LinkedIn Live every Thursday at 4 pm, no matter what. I have an audience, my analytics and feedback are clear evidence that people enjoy listening to me and my guests.

Last week, I decided to go solo with my LinkedIn Live. I've never done that and I was slightly terrified 😨. After all, there are 713 million LinkedIn users!! Imagine if they are all watching 😮

So what was going to talk about?

I was going to respond to questions that I've been asked and that I am asking myself.

Have you ever done something that you feared doing?

In this podcast, I share some practical ideas to have the courage to do something. I challenge you with 3 questions so that you can dare do something different. Nothing is in the way really!

“Our uniqueness, our individuality, and our life experience mould us into fascinating beings. I hope we can embrace that. I pray we may all challenge ourselves to delve into the deepest resources of our hearts to cultivate an atmosphere of understanding, acceptance, tolerance, and compassion. We are all in this life together” Linda Thompson

Financial resilience in leadership

50m · Published 02 Apr 05:56

Really enjoyed our stimulating and thought-provoking podcast on "Financial resilience in leadership" with Mahmood Reza and John Longford DipPFS.

Now maybe you’re asking, “How can I improve as a financial leader, regardless of where I am on the career continuum?”

Deloitte defines "Financial resilience" as "the ability of an organisation to withstand events that affect their capital structure, liquidity, revenue and assets."

Without financial resilience, commercial and operational resilience cannot be maintained.

We were keen to explore have a conversation around
- financial strategic planning (and forecasting)
- critical cash flow risk management
- communicating financial resilience to create value and foster trust
- helping the board make informed decisions
- conflict resolution (with yourself and with others) and responding to a crisis
- networking skills to hire the expert you trust

My favourite quotes:

"Part of a plan might be not to have a plan"

"Surround yourself with the experts that you trust"

"Challenge what you do and know your why"

"Being qualified is not necessarily being good at what you do"

The importance of visibility for career progression

1h 0m · Published 21 Mar 10:44

VULNERABILITY IS POWERFUL

Nadine Powrie, MA, ACC, Assoc CIPD: "What if people call me out and say negative things about me?"
Gemma Stow (she/her): " It's not about you. It's about them."

Jeni Ling: "I don't know what my top 3 strengths are."
Gemma Stow (she/her): "What is it that you don't know about yourself that you could use to your advantage? Ask 3 colleagues what they think your top 3 strengths are."

Jan Daines: "I don't have an audience."
Gemma Stow (she/her): "You don't always need an audience."

Nicki Deeson on being visible when it's too late: "and suddenly I have my back to the wall, trying to explain what the team did and how valuable they were."

and that's just a snapshot 😊

We explore great questions:
- Are you ready to give yourself permission to be first? How will you do that?
-  Do your female employees feel supported with career progression? If not, then what are you going to do about it?
-  Does self-promotion make you feel awkward? If yes, then how can you shift your mindset
-  How to get feedback that helps you?

What's in it for you?
- A visibility plan

Thank you, Gemma Stow (she/her), Nicki Deeson, Jeni Ling Jan Daines for being part of this conversation.

How to use the power of hope in conversations

12m · Published 12 Mar 11:39

Do you know this Airline Pilot Maxim: Do we want pessimism in the cockpit? (Hope Theory: Rainbows in the Mind, C.R. Snyder, 2002)

"Do we really want the pessimistic pilot, filled with anxiety, tension, worry, sadness, rejection, anger, self-criticalness, and profound uncertainty, to be at the controls when our jet is landing in a thunderstorm?"

Not me. I want a high-hope pilot in that cockpit."

But for me, there’s more to it with ‘Hope’ so let me share something that is driving my passion around these 4-letter words.

I am currently writing a PhD proposal where hope is at the core of my research. My research will investigate and analyse how hope determines the outcome of a difficult conversation related to the performance review in a business context.

Hope involves estimation of conscious or unconscious probabilities so my hypothesis is that on choosing the odds to be in our favour, we demonstrate confidence, patience, determination and courage that the ‘perceived’ difficult conversation will transform into a courageous conversation to achieve better outcomes.

Hope will not only determine the future of a strong relationship), influence future performance but also shape the future capacity and capability of a person and ultimately plays a part in the business organisational growth.

So yes, I believe that hope can determine the flow and outcome of a conversation.

In this podcast, I share 5 practical ideas to shift your thinking and your feelings. I challenge you with 3 questions so that you can start using different words. Different words lead to different conversations with different outcomes.

“Change your way of thinking. Use your energy to accomplish more productive things. The choice is yours and it can be made today!” Garrett Kingston

How to successfully manage up

13m · Published 02 Mar 07:29
Tony Robbins says that ‘According to Compton's Encyclopaedia, the English language contains some 500,000 words. Yet, the average person's working vocabulary consists of 2,000, 0.5% of the entire language. And, do you know the number of words we use most frequently, the words that make up our habitual vocabularyFor most people, it averages 200-300 words’. This is astonishing because it implies that the language you have been using may be more limited than you previously thought.

So with this in mind, imagine now...

Imagine being a middle leader with a new and experienced line manager who happens to be a micro-manager continually asking questions, having an opinion on everything you do, interfering in what you do daily and how you lead, high jacking your meetings with your teams, giving you feedback where you've no idea about the 'why' of this particular comment, for example,  'you need to be closer to your teams'. How would you feel?

In this episode, I discuss what 'managing up' is and I explore the 7 essential tools to influence up.

- When you manage up, you communicate differently
- When you create a level of safety, you encourage a degree of vulnerability
- When you maximise both synergies for maximal impact, you build great relationships

I love sharing my 7 coaching questions so that you can think about managing up' when you prepare for that next meeting with your new line manager.

How to grow your mental strength with coaching

1h 9m · Published 19 Feb 18:55

"Go for a gold medal"

If you're curious about increasing your mental strength, then you'll love this podcast.

Max Roberts is my very special guest. Max is a gym owner and a fitness/mindset coach in the North East of England. Jeni Ling introduced Max to me because she felt that I would share his coaching philosophy. I really do!

Max says

  • "When I climb up the hill, I believe I will be the hero of my own movie."
  • "We all have a need to feel significant; on what scale that is is dependent on the person."
  • "I've decided not to feel the other way."
  • "Be your biggest fan."

In our conversation, we explored

- How can we define 'mental strength'?

- What is the concept of 'significance'?

- How we can use 'love language' in our lives

- What you can do to get that gold medal every day.

My favourite question from Max: 'If you were to do the exact opposite for 48 hours, what would your life look like?"

Thank you Max for being my guest. I'll take that gold medal!

How to be an outstanding coach by having transformational conversations

1h 5m · Published 12 Feb 17:12

I am delighted to welcome Claire Pedrick, PCC to my podcast.

Claire believes that a 'coaching style is more a behaviour that is formed through practice and reflection, than a box of knowledge that can be learned. Becoming a master coach is like winning Masterchef – it’s all about distilling what you know into something more powerful, more simple and more effective.'

If you've not bought her book, then, please do 'Simplifying coaching - How to have more transformational conversations by doing less'.

Like Tracy Sinclair, and Karen Foy, Claire does not niche and I find this refreshing. It's nice to go against the flow.

In this podcast, we're having a passionate conversation about coaching. We explore:

- The reasons behind writing the book ‘How to have more transformational conversations by doing less’?

- Some of her key thinking and ideas that were born from real-life events: ‘rightsizing a conversation’, ‘cocreating the container, STOKeRS

- The quality of conversations and how to improve them

Ultimately in the end, as Claire says 💬 'it's about the value of simple conversations'.

How to accelerate your growth with coaching

51m · Published 05 Feb 08:21

This week, I'm focusing on the impact of coaching, I’ve invited Karen Foy, Lecturer Coaching and Behaviour Change at Henley Business School.

Karen and I did a conversation analysis of one of my coaching sessions when I was preparing my re-accreditation from ICF. I loved the observations and perspectives that she shared with me on my own work.

Karen is quoting Carl Jung in our conversation 'Once you've learned all your techniques and tools and models, you're just a human soul across from another human.'

Karen says:
-      We can pick out and get curious about the words
-      We need to create a safe space
-      They may be very powerful in very high ranking positions but there's still a human who has got the same issues as anybody else

Listen up if you want to know more. Karen and I
⭐️ explore what ‘clean language' for coaches' is
⭐️ focus on the importance of the coaching contract
⭐️ examine the types of conflicts where coaching can help
⭐️ discuss the difficult yet courageous conversations that leaders are having

My favourite quote from this episode:
💬 “If we can encourage people and work with people to be themselves, they have all the wisdom they need to succeed just the way we do.'

We also explored some questions:

  • What is the optimal human condition?
  • How transformational positive change and learning can be achieved

Coaching a high-performing team to create top performance

1h 2m · Published 22 Jan 13:29

Christine Billy and I share the passion for coaching high performing teams around the world. We also share the same birthday!

It's funny how we hesitate when describing a high performing team as a crystal or as a diamond. Every diamond is a crystal but every crystal isn't a diamond.

We're interested in the invisible and in the magic of high-performing teams.

It's not because you are a high-achiever that you don't have barriers, invisible blocks or that little voice tormenting you. After all, whoever you are, you are a human being with a heart and lots of emotions.

In our conversation, we spoke about

- The need to align our mind and our heart

- How to accelerate the success by implying the strategic transformation (and how to measure it)

- The types of conflicts that high performing teams are facing and how to resolve them

- The role of our intuition

I love Christine's final message of hope.
