050: Consistency Beats Intensity

17m · Published 21 Dec 05:30

Turtles win the race.  This is what I always say.

But sometimes turtles are a reminder that life doesn’t have to be a race at all!

Neither does creating.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned through experience this year it’s that consistency beats intensity, every time.

Sometimes it’s better to just take one step in front of the other and then another.

What we do consistently is what makes up our character and identity.  And more important than creating some big flashy thing is the ability to develop the character of a Creating Maven.

This is someone who shows honor and respect for their gifts by consistently creating.

But maybe you haven’t had a very consistent year and would like things to be different for next year.

This episode is about helping you put the 3 things you might be missing in place to get and stay consistent with creating.

Because if you’re going to bring beautiful things to life with your gifts, this is what you need!

Did you struggle to commit to creating this year?

Maybe it’s because you didn’t know how things were going to go or how to guarantee that they’d go well.

It’s okay.

This is a common hang-up that gets folks stuck.

But the truth is there’s no way around commitment.

You must commit first and know the details of how later if you’re going to do anything that’s truly meaningful for your life.

In this episode, I show you how this is true and push you to get ready for the leap we’ll all be taking in the new year.

046: 3 Signs It's Time to Leave Your Job

20m · Published 26 Oct 04:30

Have you ever eaten something that had gone past its expiration date? Yerk! It was awful and you probably immediately spat it out of your mouth!  Well, things can feel just as awful when you stay in a job or any environment that’s gone past its expiration date for you.  It’ll get your stomach in knots and feeling all kinds of sick.

But why do we get into and stay in these past-due-date situations?  Often it’s because we don’t know how to read the expiration date on a job or situation the way we can easily read it on the label of a bottle.

Sound familiar?  Maybe you’re in it right now?

In this episode I wanna help you get better at reading the signs and specifically 3 signs that show you when you’re in a job environment that’s no longer for you.

045: Whose Approval Really Matters?

12m · Published 12 Oct 04:55

Have you ever tried so hard to win someone’s approval that you lost yourself?

It’s hard to admit it but like me, I’m sure you can think of at least one area in your life where you've done this.

How does it feel when you come to your senses and realize that you've wasted your time?

Big ouch!

It’s not that there’s anything inherently wrong with wanting to be approved of by others.

After all, we are social beings living social lives in a social world!

But things can go wrong when we’re chasing approval from those who are unable or unwilling to see the true value of who we are and what we bring to the table.

The cost of chasing their approval is not just our sense of self but everything we have to offer.

It often means we are not focused on creating with our gifts and making our unique contribution to the world.

This is precisely what happened to P.T. Barnum in the musical The Greatest Showman and it was a tragedy!

But there’s much we can learn from how he bounced back and got back to who he was and what he created.

In this episode, you’ll learn 3 of these key lessons so that you can also get back to creating with your gifts and making the contribution that only you can make!

043: Build Your Narrative. Change Your Life. | Guillaume Wiatr

54m · Published 14 Sep 04:30

Maybe you’ve heard the following David Foster Wallace parable that goes like this:

There are these two young fish swimming along, and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, “Morning, boys. How’s the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, “What in the world is water?”

We can all identify with these fish because like them we are also swimming around in our own water.

That water is our narrative and it influences everything about who we are and what we do.

Do you know what narratives are running your life right now?

Are you ready to take responsibility for building a new one so you can create a better work and life future?

My guest in this episode is Guillaume Wiatr who is an expert on helping entrepreneurs and businesses build strategic narratives that align their teams and help them innovate.

But his work and model don’t just apply to these groups.

There’s something very powerful here for you that’s going to help you change the water you’re swimming in!

By the end of this episode you’ll learn:

  • The difference between story and narrative and how they influence your life
  • How when narratives change, worlds can change
  • How to build a new strategic narrative to change your life and impact your world

About my guest: Guillaume is the author of Strategic Narrative: A Simple Method That Business Leaders Can Use to Make Everyone Understand Their Business, Get Behind it and Believe In It.  His company, MetaHelm, guides CEOs, founders, and business owners to align teams and accelerate innovation adoption.  A former big-firm strategy consultant, Guillaume has founded four ventures.

He is sought after by senior executives of companies like Alaska Airlines, the Gates Foundation, Generations For Peace, AIG, L’Oréal, Spencer Stuart, GAP, Google, Microsoft, and the US and French governments.

After helping to save a 20M euros venture during the dot-com boom, Guillaume went on a mission to turn every company into a source of inspiration that few can resist.

Guillaume teaches and mentors entrepreneurs at startup incubators, EMLyon international business school, and the University of Washington Master of Science in Entrepreneurship, ranked #3 in the US.
